Time is not always a luxury that one has when it comes to cooking. Sometimes, it’s all about scoffing down something before leaving the house; or making a quick dinner, with the emphasis on “quick”. Enter, the microwave!

This fish dish relies on fresh Asian flavors, with the microwave ensuring that it is steamed speedily. The result is delicately flakey fish that is ready in minutes.

Ingredients:

• 1 ½-inch section of ginger
• 2-3 medium green onions
• 1 handful fresh shiitake mushrooms
• 1 handful of fresh coriander
• 1 pound of fish filet
• Sea salt
• 1 tablespoon of rice wine or dry sherry
• 1-2 tablespoons of soy sauce
• 3 tablespoons of water

Instructions:

  1. Peel the ginger and thinly slice it into fine strips. Trim the green onions and cut them, too, into thin strips, as well as the mushrooms.
  2. Season the fish and set aside. Place the green onions in a dish that can be microwaved, and put the fish on top. Pour on the rice wine and soy sauce, before adding the mushrooms. Pour on the water. Loosely cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high for 3 to 5 minutes. Check doneness after 3 minutes by pushing the tip of a knife into the flesh. If there’s no resistance, you’re done. If not, microwave for 30 to 60 seconds longer.
  3. Serve with fresh coriander.

Everyone knows the Japanese are particularly good at cooking fish. It is the base ingredient of their cuisine, and Japanese-style fish has become intensely popular around the world.

Here are 3 of the most popular fish dishes Japan has to offer.

Nanbanzuke

In Japanese this dish means “foreign marinade.” This is because the fish is marinated in vinegar, deep fried and served with onions, cucumbers and hot red peppers. These were foods introduced from the West.

Unadon

This interesting dish is made from grilled eel fillets and steamed rice. The eel is specially grilled in the kabayaki style, where it is put on a skewer and grilled in tare sauce.

Hitsumabushi

This traditional Japanese dish centers around grilled eel and steamed rice again. But it is accompanied by a number of garnishes and condiments and is served in a very particular way. It is served in four portions. The first is eaten on its own. The second is served with seaweed, green onions and wasarbi sauce. The third is the same but with a green tea soup addition, while the fourth can be enjoyed in whatever way you like.

If you live in a place where a seafood market isn’t available for convenient access, buying fish and shellfish in the supermarket might be the best option for you. Since you can’t rely on the expertise of a fishmonger while shopping, there are some things that you should keep in mind.

Here are three tricks you should use to ensure you’re buying fresh, good quality seafood at the supermarket!

Look for a Packaged Date

If you’re buying pre-packaged seafood, it is always crucial to look for a packaged date, which will show you when the product you’re buying was prepared to sell. If it exceeds more than 2 or 3 days, you might want to avoid it.

Avoid Mondays

Did you know that Mondays are the worst day to buy seafood at the supermarket? Fishermen generally don’t go out to work on Sundays, which means the freshest catch you’ll be able to buy on a Monday will be at least a couple of days old. Going on the other days throughout the week is a safer idea.

Trust Your Nose

Even if a package shows fish or seafood still hasn’t reached its expiration date, an unpleasant smell can tell you that you should be avoiding it. So, trust your nose and don’t buy any foul-smelling fish or shellfish.

Are you running low on ideas for what to do with fish? While it might seem like there simply aren’t a whole lot of flavors that you can add to options like salmon or tuna, the truth is that marinades are a great way to add a unique flavor to these fish options.

We love the combination of the flavors of garlic and soy sauce, which we have are the bases of one of our go-to marinade choices when preparing fish. It works especially well with strong flavors like salmon, tuna, and mahi-mahi, but can really be used for any type of fish that you like.

Here’s how to make it!

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 ounce lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions:

The instructions for using this marinade are really quite simple. All you need to do is combine these ingredients in a container such as a plastic bag or a Tupperware container, stir them together thoroughly, and then add the piece of fish to the marinade.

Let the fish sit in the marinade for 2-4 hours in order to ensure that the garlic soy marinade flavor is imbued. After that, just prepare the fish however you’d like to, and enjoy!

It seems that everyone is obsessed with seafood, but do you actually know what you eat? With the huge pollution of waters, the chances are whatever you buy, it won’t be as healthy as you think. There are certain types of fish you should never eat. Most of them can absorb a lot of negative ingredients, and by eating them you ingest those too.

Tilapia

The problem with tilapia is that it’s rich in unhealthy omega-6 fatty acids, which can stimulate an inflammatory response. It is one of the fish you should never eat because you have healthier alternatives.

Eel

The thing about eels is that they can absorb a number of harmful chemicals that are a part of the water where they swim. That will all eventually get into your body. So it is not the healthiest choice as well.

Atlantic Cod

The Atlantic cod is a very rare breed right now, so we all have to think about that first before ordering.

Mackerel

If you are a fan of mackerel, I’ve got some bad news. This type of fish contains mercury, which is, let’s say no the healthiest choice for your body. If you have another choice on the table, make sure you avoid mackerel.

Fish is a great source of many essential elements for the body. But not everyone likes it. Since you need to get those omega-3 and alpha-linolenic acids from somewhere, you have to find fish alternatives. Below you will find some of the foods you can include in your meal to get a part of the essentials that fish has to offer.

Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are a tasty fish alternative that will provide you with the alpha-linolenic acid your body needs. A lot of people decide to use flaxseed oil and are loving it. When it comes to these seeds, it’s really easy to include them in salads, morning oats, smoothies and more.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlkeMxSnWvN/

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds contain just as much omega-3 acids as fish. So if you are not big on the sea creatures, make sure to get your omega-3 through chia seeds. In other words, these seeds are one of the best fish alternatives you will find.

Soybeans

Soybeans are a good source of ALA, especially for people who don’t eat meat. It is definitely not the same thing as fish, but still offers a portion of the daily requirements.

Walnuts

A quarter cup of walnuts provides 14% of the ALA you need in one day. You have to very careful when eating them because there is also a limit on that.
