Sometimes it’s just the perfect time to have a wine and cheese night, and if you want to have a bunch of varieties of cheese, chances are you won’t be able to finish all of them. So, what’s the correct way to store opened cheeses? Keep reading to find out how you should store cheeses to ensure their freshness.

Wrap It in Cheese Paper or Parchment Paper

When you break the seal of your cheese container, it will no longer keep your cheese fresh. To avoid mold and oxidation, store your cheese in cheese paper or wrap it in parchment paper or wax, then put it in a partially sealed bag.

Store it in a Cheese Drawer or Vegetable Crisper

Avoid storing cheese in the refrigerator door or towards the front of the shelves as the cheese needs to be kept in a consistent temperature. Instead, store wrapped cheese in the cheese drawer or vegetable crisper.

Pay Attention to the Type of Cheese

How you store cheese depends on the type, as hard cheese like Parmesan should be wrapped tightly in paper and then loosely wrapped in plastic, while semi-hard to semi-soft cheeses like cheddar, Swiss, and gouda should we wrapped loosely in paper and then loosely in plastic wrap.

If you love cheese, you’re in for a treat. Get ready for a fun adventure, because we’re about to travel to a handful of European countries and learn about some of their best cheeses. Some of them you’ll know quite well, while others may require you to do some research. But one thing we can reassure you of is that they’re all delicious!

Brie

We figured we’d start things off with one of our favorite cheeses of all time: the amazing Brie. Creamy, scrumptious, and amazing when paired with wine, this French cheese is simply perfect in every way.

Parmesan

Parmesan is one of the most popular cheeses in the entire world, and for good reason. It offers a delicate yet powerful kick, which is why it’s often used as a topping of sorts. But let’s be real, it’s delicious no matter how you eat it.

Mozzarella

In addition to Parmesan, Italy is also well known for Mozzarella, which is probably the most popular cheese on the planet. Best added to dishes like pizza, Mozzarella is a classic for a reason, and it’ll probably never go away.

Tête de Moine

For our last cheese, we thought we’d travel to Switzerland and introduce you to a delicacy you may never have heard of. Tête de Moine has a unique flavor but also a special way of being presented. It’s cut in extremely thin slices and twisted around like a flower, making for an all-around amazing culinary experience.

Willow Smith may have whipped her hair back and forth back in the day, but we’re all about whipping something else—feta. Feta is a fantastic addition to salads and pasta dishes as the Greek cheese is both crumbly and creamy at the same time. While we adore feta in its natural form, whipped feta is our new favorite.

Ingredients

• 8 ounces quality feta, drained
• ¾ cup Greek yogurt
• 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
• 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
• 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh mint
• 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley
• 2-3 tablespoons of toasted pine nuts
• 1-2 tablespoons crushed pistachios
• Lemon zest

Instructions

  1. Blend the feta, Greek yogurt, and lemon zest in a blender or food processor. While the processor is running, drizzle olive oil through the top opening until the feta is whipped to a smooth mixture.
  2. Transfer the whipped feta to a serving plate. With the back of your spoon, smooth the top of the feta, making an indentation in the center. Pour some olive oil all over the feta, then top with the red pepper flakes, fresh herbs, and nuts.
  3. Serve with pita chips or pita wedges, on a salad, or on toast—however you’d like!

If you love meted cheese, then here are 5 cheeses you have to try.

Gruyere

Made famous by its use in traditional French onion soup and cheese fondue, Gruyere is a gloriously smooth and stringy cheese when heated.

Mozzarella

Another very popular cheese, mozzarella is perfect on pizzas, in pasta sauces, or on anything baked. It becomes a beautifully molten mess that browns on top and has just the perfect texture.

Camembert

This strong traditional French cheese can be eaten hot or cold. If you heat it in the oven or the microwave, it has a beautifully molten interior encased in a firm outer casing. Perfect for sandwiches and for dipping.

Fontina

This buttery, fruity, nutty cheese is a satisfying addition to a sandwich, cheese board or fondue. Just apply a light heat, and it will make your heart melt.

Asiago

You can get an older form of Asiago or a younger strain known as fresco. The older form of the cheese is firmer, and very good for grating. But the younger fresco model is much better for melting.

Let’s take a look at 4 of the most unusual cheeses from around the world.

Casu Marzu

Traditionally popular in southern Italy, casu marzu is a cheese that is served with live maggots. Left to rot until it attracts flies to lay eggs, the cheese is ready to enjoy after the eggs hatch.

Milbenkase

This German cheese is left among dust mites for several months until it turns progressively yellow, red-brown, and finally black. When the cheese is black, it is ready to eat—dust mites and all. It is said to have a strong earthy flavor.

Yak Cheese

Enjoyed among some Tibetan populations, this cheese has a hard resin-like consistency. It is made from dried yak milk and should be slowly sucked over several hours rather than bitten.

Lichen Cheese

A Canadian company is experimenting with a cheese called lichen cheese. It is made from combining Quebec goat’s milk with roasted and boiled lichen. It is then left to rest and ferment before serving. It is said to have a taste like the classic blue cheese.

Regardless of the time of year, cheese boards are sure to impress your guests. But there’s so much that goes into making the perfect cheese board like deciding what cheeses to get, what other foods should go on the plate, and how can you make it look appetizing. Here are some tips for making the perfect cheese board.

Pick a Variety of Textures

Make sure you have different types of cheese including soft, semi-soft, fresh, firm, and hard, so there are tons of options available. Also, keep the textures of the cheeses in mind when figuring out what types of bread and crackers to serve with it—soft cheese pair with thin crackers and hard cheeses go better with slices of fresh bread.

Keep Your Guests in Mind

Pick some common cheeses like cheddar and brie, and some more adventurous ones like blue cheese and Gloucester.

Include Savory and Sweet Additions

The additions you have on the cheese board should compliment the cheeses and you can’t go wrong with honey, figs, olives, and toasted nuts.

Pay Attention to Presentation

Give your plate an added boost of color with some rosemary or thyme sprigs. You can also add labels to the cheeses and individual knives to keep the plate organized.

Room Temperature

Cheese should be served at room temperature, so take your plate out of the fridge at least an hour before your guests arrive.

There’s no doubt that lasagna is one of the most popular pasta dishes out there. This Italian classic is a favorite due to its easy preparation, rich taste, and the number of people that have grown up eating this dish.

Did you know that it’s possible to put your own spin on lasagna with different types of cheese? Here are some that you should definitely try adding to your next plate of lasagna.

Mozzarella

Mozzarella is the classic cheese used in most preparations of lasagna. Why does it work so well? The creamy, stretchy nature of this classic cheese and its neutral taste allows the meat flavors and other components of the dish to shine through.

Pepper Jack

More and more people are trying to make spicy lasagna these days, and a great cheese option for this version of the dish is pepper jack. Creamy and possessing a good texture for lasagna, the added spicy peppers in this cheese give it the perfect characteristics for a spicy lasagna.

Cheddar

Sometimes people prefer a little more “bite” in their lasagna cheese, which means that cheddar could be a good option. While this traditional cheese of British origins does have a little more bite than mozzarella, it’s plenty creamy too.

London is on its way to becoming the capital of cheese! The city is getting a pop-up cheese suite, as announced by the chain restaurant Café Rouge. The suite will open in Camden and the whole experience will be devoted to cheese.

Some of the things that await the lucky guests include cheese art, cheese bedding, and, of course, plenty of different cheeses to snack on. The restaurant is known for its “fromage-filled menu” and this project is an homage to that. You can enter the raffle if you want to win a stay in this amazing suite with a friend on February 7th, 2020.

If we’re judging according to the illustration the restaurant shared on social media, the suite’s decor will closely follow the theme of cheese.

“Included in your stay will be full access to all amenities plus the use of the cheese hotline delivery service – so you can relax and unwind at your leisure, whether that be listening to R ‘n’ Brie or catching up with someone cheesy on the eyes,” the restaurant’s website reads.

Expand your tastebuds by trying some of the most famous cheeses from all over the world. Here are four popular cheeses and suggestions on how to serve them.

Brie

With its rich, velvety texture and delicate, buttery taste, a wheel of French brie is essential to a proper cheese plate. Enjoy at room temperature, or for an easy appetizer, bake it for a few minutes in a hot oven and serve with fresh fruits and crispy crackers.

Halloumi

Originating in Greece, what makes this salty treat so special and versatile is its ability to maintain shape when heated. This makes it an excellent choice for grilling. Some even say it has a similar texture to grilled chicken!

Manchego

This Spanish cheese has a zesty flavor that pairs beautifully with the sweetness of many fruits such as apricots or grapes. In addition, it melts easily, making it a delicious component in various egg dishes.

Burrata

What could be better than cheese stuffed with even more cheese? This creamy Italian delicacy is formed by filling a pouch of fresh mozzarella with a  soft, milky curd. Burrata can be served as a heavenly side dish of its own with crusty bread or atop a fresh salad.
