Salmon is one of the most complicated foods to prepare, and here’s why. On the one hand, you need to make sure it’s cooked enough so that it’s safe to eat. On the other hand, there’s nothing worse than a salmon that’s too dry, and it happens fairly often. If you’re trying to optimize your cooked salmon, here’s how to prepare it to perfection.

Buy Quality Salmon

First and foremost, start with fresh, high-quality salmon. Look for vibrant, firm fillets that have a pleasant smell of the sea. Fresh salmon not only ensures optimal flavor but also contributes to a tender and flaky texture when cooked.

Proper Seasoning

When it comes to seasoning, simplicity is often the key to letting the natural flavors of salmon shine. A sprinkle of salt, a squeeze of lemon, and a dash of herbs like dill or parsley can enhance the taste without overpowering it.

Cooking it Right

Be mindful of cooking time and temperature. Overcooking salmon can result in a dry and tough texture while undercooking may leave it raw in the center. Aim for a slightly pink center that flakes easily with a fork. Cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of the fillet, so keep an eye on it and adjust accordingly.

Mushy food doesn’t usually spell out the word appetizing—most of the time. Just saying the word “mushy” is making us uncomfortable even as we’re writing this. But as all seasoned cooks and bakers will know, having mushy food on your hands isn’t always a bad thing. Here are three instances where it’ll benefit you if your food is mushy!

Avocado

All guacamole-lovers knew this one was coming. Indeed, a mushy avocado is exactly what one needs if they’re trying to make themselves a fresh, tasty mix of guac. The mushier, the easier it is to mash up and mix in whichever seasonings you like!

Banana

Banana is another great example of a food that can benefit if it’s mushy. “Can” is the key word here because a solid banana is great on its own as well. It’s just that a mushy food can, alternatively, provide great fodder for a sweet, tasty, banana cake recipe.

Salmon

Perhaps this one is more about personal taste, but we can’t stand cooked salmon when it’s too dry. Does that mean that we’d prefer it to be mushy? To be honest, somewhere in the middle would be preferable, but we’d definitely rather it be moist than hard and dry.

Cooking salmon gives you a lot of options—you can choose to grill it, roast it, or sear it. No matter which option you end up picking, there are tips you can use to prepare healthy and truly delicious salmon dishes like a chief.

Pan-Seared Salmon

If you are a fan of crispy skin, this is the best way to get it when it comes to salmon. While cooking it, make sure to pay a lot of attention to that moment when the fish is fried and crispy enough. Dust the skin with a bit of flour or cornstarch right before it hits the hot oil. The secret is to keep skin dry, don’t drizzle the skin after serving it.

Grilled Salmon

After removing the bone out of salmon, there comes the divine part—grilling it. It takes exactly 15 minutes to get perfectly grilled salmon, 30 minutes for both sides. Some love to spice it with lemon and herbs, while others prefer a mustard glaze.

Baking Salmon Fillets

The easiest and quickest way is to bake salmon in a low oven, around 300°F. Preparation includes putting a pinch of salt and pepper, coating every fillet with oil, and tossing breadcrumbs all over them.

These delicious salmon and leek parcels will become your new dinner party favorite recipes. Much easier than it looks, you can make quality dishes in under 20 minutes of preparation.

Here’s how to make them in 4 simple steps.

Gather Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need 4 finely chopped leeks, 25g butter, 100g cream cheese, 6 sheets of filo pastry and 2 skinless salmon fillets.

Prepare Leeks

Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Fry the leeks for 10 minutes in a large saucepan with 3 tablespoons water and 2 knobs of butter. When leeks are tender, remove from the frying pan and leave to cool. Mix in cream cheese and some seasoning.

Assemble Parcels

Brush 1 sheet of pastry with melted butter, followed by 2 more sheets on top. Brush butter between each layer. Place the salmon fillet in the center of the pastry and season before spooning over half the leak mix. Fold the ends over the top and scrunch together to enclose until they are little parcels. Repeat this process for the other fillet.

Oven Bake

After brushing both parcels with melted butter, cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until they are browned and crisp. Serve with fresh green salad.

Are you running low on ideas for what to do with fish? While it might seem like there simply aren’t a whole lot of flavors that you can add to options like salmon or tuna, the truth is that marinades are a great way to add a unique flavor to these fish options.

We love the combination of the flavors of garlic and soy sauce, which we have are the bases of one of our go-to marinade choices when preparing fish. It works especially well with strong flavors like salmon, tuna, and mahi-mahi, but can really be used for any type of fish that you like.

Here’s how to make it!

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 ounce lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions:

The instructions for using this marinade are really quite simple. All you need to do is combine these ingredients in a container such as a plastic bag or a Tupperware container, stir them together thoroughly, and then add the piece of fish to the marinade.

Let the fish sit in the marinade for 2-4 hours in order to ensure that the garlic soy marinade flavor is imbued. After that, just prepare the fish however you’d like to, and enjoy!
