You Can Make Bubble Tea at Home

If you’re a big fan of boba or bubble tea, you’re probably pretty used to dropping five dollars here and ten dollars there on drinks. But boba is no different than your favorite Starbucks drink: you can definitely make it at home and save a lot of money. Here’s how.

Start with a strong, robust tea that can handle being watered down with ice and milk. Jasmine and black tea are both great options.

You’ll also need some tapioca pearls, which you can buy in bags. Cook them in the serving size you’ll drink immediately, because they don’t keep their texture well. Follow the instructions on the package; the pearls can take from 5 to 60 minutes to cook depending on which ones you get.

Then it’s just a matter of putting it all together. Steep your tea and let it cool. Pour your cup of tea over a glass filled with ice and tapioca pearls. Add milk (dairy or plant-based, whichever you prefer) and your sweetener of choice. Simple syrup is a popular option. Serve the bubble tea with a large boba straw and enjoy. It’s that easy!
