Tsunami Cakes Are the First Viral Food Craze of the Year

Last year has given us more astonishing viral food trends than we can count, and 2021 already has one to match them all. Tsunami cakes are taking the internet by storm, and their appeal is pretty easy to explain.

Like the viral “everything is cake” trend before them, tsunami cakes owe their enormous popularity to the element of surprise that they have in store. Seeing a photo of these cakes simply isn’t enough, because the real magic happens when you watch one of the videos that show smooth icing pouring all over them.

Tsunami cakes are wrapped with a thin layer of plastic, which is pulled up to reveal the liquid frosting. The cakes take their true form once the frosting floods over the top, creating a truly amazing effect.

Many food artists are currently trying to put their twist on this trend, but Nayane Capistrano is the one responsible for putting it on the map. She found viral fame with her pull-me-up Sofia the First cake and shared many more amazing cakes inspired by beloved cartoon characters with over 200,000 of her Instagram followers.
