Portugal is a magical country for so many reasons; the language, the buildings, the food, but especially the treats. There are two major desserts that are native to the country, one is known by many and one is really a hidden secret from most of the outside world. Take a trip anywhere in the country and discover the sweetness of Portugal.

Pastel De Nata

These egg custard tarts are one of the most famous Portuguese sweets for good reason. They are like mini creme-brulees to go, served with cinnamon and powdered sugar. If you go to Lisbon, the best place to get pastel de nata is the famous bakery Pasteis de Belém. The bakery is a bit outside the city limits but is well worth the trip.

Sonhos

If you plan a trip to Portugal over the holidays, ask around and you will be sure to find a special holiday treat called sonhos. Sonhos translates to dreams in English, and are called such because they are a donut-like pastry made from a dough similar to choux pastry. You won’t find them anytime after Christmas, so make sure to look out for them and stock up when you are in Portugal.
