Broccoli is one of those foods that people either hate or love.  However, they should definitely be part of everyone’s diet because they are super healthy, being a source of vitamins C, K, and A as well as various minerals.

Luckily, there are lots of methods to make broccoli more palatable, allowing everyone to enjoy its nutritional benefits. Actress Kristen Bell recently went on social media to share one of her own methods and it might be a game changer.

In a story posted on her Instagram, Bell revealed a “major secret” that helps her turn broccoli into a tasty dish. The Veronica Mars star recommended garnishing steamed broccoli with salt, crushed pretzels, and parmesan cheese.

“Add salt, a little bit of crushed pretzels, and a little bit of parmesan cheese. Game over, everyone will eat it. It’s delicious,” Bell explained.

Additionally, Bell also offered a vegan-friendly version of the recipe. Instead of pretzels and parmesan cheese, she recommends pairing steamed broccoli with nutritional yeast and lemon juice.

Bell’s recipe is definitely worth trying but you can also experiment with various other methods to make broccoli tastier. This includes combining them with garlic and butter, stir-frying them, or making them part of a salad. If you try more than one, the chances are that you’ll find something you like and broccoli won’t be an unwelcomed food on your plate.

Boosting your immune system is a smart move during the current global health situation. While there’s no substitute for social distancing and mask use, consuming a diet that helps your immune system stay in peak shape sure doesn’t hurt either.

Veggies are a great source of immune-boosting compounds like Vitamin C and antioxidants, and here are three that you should consider adding to your diet for this fall and winter season.

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers are great as an addition to salad, in fajitas, or even when used as a shell for a “stuffed” Italian-inspired dish. What’s great about this vegetable is that they are chock full of Vitamin C which can help keep you sickness-free.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a classic food that’s used in all kinds of dishes and prepared in all kinds of ways, but not many know about its health advantages. Several antioxidant-boosting phytochemicals can be found in this veggie, including glucobrassicin and beta-carotene. These work together to boost your body’s immune response.

Spinach

Spinach has always been lauded as healthy, but did you know that it’s especially effective as an immune system booster? That’s right, as spinach contains high doses of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. Use it sauteed or in salads!

This classic Chinese-American dish is a restaurant favorite of ours, but now that we’re social distancing, we’ve figured out how to make it at home. This recipe is ready in less than an hour, which is quicker than it would take to get carry-out. It’s meant for four people and it’s best served with rice.

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce, divided
  • Juice of 1/2 lime
  • 3 tbsp. packed brown sugar, divided
  • 2 tbsp. cornstarch, divided
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 lb. sirloin steak, sliced thinly against the grain
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup Low-sodium beef (or chicken) broth
  • 2 tsp. Sriracha (optional)
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Thinly sliced green onions, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Whisk 1/3 cup soy sauce, lime juice, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, and 1 tablespoon cornstarch in a medium bowl.
  2. Add steak and season with salt and pepper. Toss until the steak is coated, and marinate it for 20 minutes.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil and add steak in a single layer, working in batches, and cook it until it’s seared, about 2 minutes per side. Remove the steak and set it aside.
  4. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in remaining tablespoon of cornstarch until the garlic is coated, then stir in the broth, the remaining 2 tablespoons brown sugar, remaining 1/3 cup soy sauce, and Sriracha.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer and add broccoli, cooking until it’s tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper then put the steak back into the skillet.
  6. Before serving, garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Are you a dog owner? If so, it’s likely that your furry friend has hounded you at the kitchen or dinner table for a bite of whatever food that you might be eating. Keeping our pets healthy is certainly a priority, which might give you pause and make you avoid sharing your food with your pet.

Vegetables, however, are generally pretty safe for pups. Check out these three that you can both enjoy without any fear of hurting your dog.

Carrots

Carrots are completely healthy for dogs, which is good because they sure are delicious! You can give your pet pieces of this tasty veggie as long as they are bite-sized, ensuring that he or she won’t choke on them.

Broccoli

Broccoli is also safe for dogs, and its high fiber content can even help them if they are having digestive issues. Be sure to give them raw broccoli or broccoli that hasn’t been cooked in oil or with extra ingredients, as these can harm them.

Cucumbers

Good news: cucumbers are also safe for dogs to eat! They will not only be a crunchy green treat for your four-legged friend, but they can also give them a hydration boost, which owners with dogs that are finicky about drinking water will find especially useful.

Broccoli is one of those veggies that people either love or hate, and if you still haven’t discovered its magic, it’s because you’re not preparing it properly. There are many amazing dishes that will make you see this veggie in a whole new light, and Nisha of Cooking For Peanuts shared quite a few on her blog.

Broccoli and Chickpeas Sauce

Chickpeas are one of Nisha’s go-to vegan ingredients, and she couldn’t resist mixing them up with broccoli. She brought the best out of this combo with a delicious white sauce.

Veggie Loaded Sweet Potatoes

If you still haven’t discovered the magic of stuffed potatoes, now’s the time to give them a try. You can fill them with all your favorite veggies, such as broccoli, sautéed bell peppers, and mushrooms.

Tofu and Broccoli Stir Fry

Tofu and broccoli are Nisha’s favorite vegan combo, and she often shares recipes with these two ingredients. She enjoys serving them with homemade stir-fry sauce that takes their flavor to a whole new level.

Crispy Roasted Broccoli

You can serve roasted broccoli with pretty much anything, and Nisha doesn’t shy away from mixing them up with all sorts of different ingredients. She opted for potatoes with tahini dressing, BBQ chickpeas, and avocados this time around.
