As far as fall desserts go, none of them compares to the apple pie, and you’ll have to choose the right type of apples to truly make it pop. All apple varieties have their pros and cons, but if you’re looking for one that will take your apple pie to new heights, these three types of apples are a good place to start.

Granny Smith

If you enjoy apples with a tart flavor, Granny Smith is probably one of your personal favorites, and it’s a great choice for apple pies. One thing you should look for in your apples is a firm texture, so they won’t get too mushy in the oven, and that’s exactly what you’re going to find in Granny Smith.

Honeycrisp

Not everyone enjoys apples with a strong tart flavor, and Honeycrisp is your best bet if you prefer apples that pack a sweet punch. They offer just the taste and texture that you’re looking for, and they’ll help your apple pie hold its shape because they won’t release too much juice while baking.

Braeburn

Braeburn is another popular variety that many apple pie lovers swear by. Its unique flavor will balance the sweetness and tartness of your apple pie, while also holding up well in the oven because it releases very little liquid during the baking process.

At this time of year, many of us are lucky enough to have a glut of apples from our fruit trees in the garden. If you don’t have your own trees, perhaps you’ve been gifted a crate of apples from a friend of family member, or simply couldn’t resist buying a load of this seasonal fruit in the grocery store. If you’ve now got more apples than you know what to do with, check out these three ideas of ways to use up these delicious fruits.

Apple Bread

Follow your favorite banana bread recipe, but replace the quantity of bananas it calls for with homemade apple puree. To make the puree, stew the apples in a saucepan with a tablespoon of sugar until they start to fall apart. The puree may be a touch more wet than mashed bananas, so you may need to slightly up the amount of flour used in the recipe.

Roast Chicken With Apple

Halfway through the time it takes to roast the chicken, take three or four apples, pierce their skins with a fork, and place them around the chicken on the roasting tray. As the chicken continues to roast, its juices should mingle with those of the apples, creating a delicious gravy base. The apples can be served up as they are, or mashed into potatoes to create a sumptuous, tasty mash.

Vegetable Stew

If you are cooking up a hearty vegetable stew, add a few cubed apples to the mix. As they cook down, they will lend a sweetness and tartness that can really add interest to the flavors in the stew, without overwhelming the overall taste.

If you are preparing a fruit snack for later, and you love sliced apples, then you probably had that situation where your favorite fruit doesn’t look the same as at the moment when you prepared it. We all had that unpleasant situation where we prepared perfect little slices of apple to eat later, and in the meantime, they go brown. Luckily, there are some techniques that you can use to keep your apple fresh for hours after you sliced it.

First, you need to know why it happens. The main culprit for slices going brown is oxidation. So, we need a way to keep slices away from the air. One of the ways to do this is to use an apple slicer to create wedges and put pieces together after slicing. Or we can just use a simple kitchen knife, clean slices, and put them back into the apple shape, and then tighten with a rubber band or two.

Another great way to achieve the same effect is to squeeze lemon or lime juice over the slices. A mixture of water and honey is also known to give good results. You just need to soak the slices in it for a few minutes and then store them as you like for later. Enjoy trying these recipes!

The fall season is finally here, and as you begin to notice the temperatures dropping and the leaves changing colors, you’ll also see that different seasonal fruits and vegetables are becoming available at your local grocery store or supermarket.

When making your shopping list from September through December, make sure to add these tasty in-season fruits to your list and enjoy all of their fantastic possibilities.

Apples

Apples might be thought of as a year-round fruit, but these beauties actually come into season during the autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. While great as a simple snack, you can also try more adventurous recipes—like baked apples with brown sugar or apple cider—by using these little guys.

Cranberries

Cranberry sauce is a staple on Thanksgiving plates every November, so it comes as no surprise that this fruit is at its best during the fall. Tarts, pies, and cakes are some of the places where this “superfood” stands out, but the possibilities are really endless.

Pears

Pears are like applesubiquitous year-round—but at their peak during the fall. The summer heat turns these fruits sweet and juicy by the time they are ready for harvest in the fall, after which they can be used in salads, as a snack, or for any of a number of culinary uses.

Fall is almost here and with the cooler weather comes cozy sweaters, colorful leaves, and apple season! While apple pies and apple ciders are popular ways to make use of the delicious fruit, there are tons of other fun ways to use apples and one of our favorites happens to be apple pops. Apple pops are like candy apples, but they’re easier to eat as you don’t have to cut into them. This recipe makes 10 pops and here’s how to make this fall treat.

Ingredients:

• 3-4 large apples
• 2 cups caramel for apple dipping
• 1/2 cup chocolate chips, melted
• 10 wooden ice pop sticks
• 1/4 cup peanuts, chopped
• 1 tablespoon rainbow sprinkles

Instructions:

  1. Wash and dry the apples and cut them into 1/2 inch-thick slices, making sure to cut into the same direction as the core to keep the apple shape. For each apple, you should get between two to four apple-shaped slices.
  2. With a butter knife, puncture a small slit in the bottom center of each slice and then insert a wooden ice pop stick. Use a paper towel to get rid of any excess juices. Then, transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Melt the caramel following the instructions on the packaging.
  4. Dip each of the apples in the caramel, allowing them to fully coat and letting the excess caramel drip back into the pan.
  5. Put the apples on the parchment-lined baking sheet and drizzle with chocolate.
  6. Top with peanuts or sprinkles and then put the baking sheet in the refrigerator, allowing the chocolate to firm up, for about 10 minutes.
  7. Enjoy!

As the Fourth of July soon approaches there are certain foods that you’ll see at almost any barbeque including hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and apple pie. Apple pie has a long association with the US’ independence day. But do you know why this pastry is connected with the holiday? It turns out that apple pie was one of the first desserts made in America.

It dates back to when Americans gained independence from Britain and started distancing themselves from British culture including traditional English desserts like scones and bread pudding. Way back in the 1700s, newcomers from the Netherlands and Germany taught early settlers from an English descent how to make buttery crusts and the colonists filled them with sliced apples and spices which eventually became the dessert we know and love today. In 1796, in the first American cookbook, American Cookery, a recipe was published for apple pie. Like the Fourth of July, apple pie symbolizes America’s independence from Britain.

“As American as Apple Pie”

Chances are you’ve heard someone say “as American as apple pie,” but you probably weren’t aware where the term originated from. The phrase came from the folktale Johnny Appleseed, but it didn’t become popular until after World War II when it was common for soldiers to say they enlisted “for mom and apple pie.” Ever since it’s been used to describe anything patriotic.

Do you ever CRAVE vegetables? ?? . I always wondered how so many of my patients could feel totally “fine” going days on end without eating a vegetable. I’m talking, not even a slice of tomato or lettuce on a sandwich. If I go a few days without some leafy greens or even just a tiny pop of color on my plate my body is FEELING it. I usually feel less energized, haven’t had a proper ?, and don’t feel as satisfied at meals. If I spend a few days eating out or I’m enjoying new foods on vacation my body will soon speak up, LOUDLY that it needs veggies. ?‍♀ . What I’ve come to understand is that for so many people, when having daily veggies isn’t part of the routine, they don’t actually KNOW what it feels like to have that added boost of fiber and nutrients. Their body hasn’t yet learned to feel truly GREAT and crave vegetables more often. It’s not your fault, and nobody is a “bad” person for this, it’s just the habit you’ve gotten into! . We all know veggies are healthy, but until we start to include more of them, and in truly DELICIOUS ways, we won’t get that craving or understand our body’s signal to fill up on a plate of greens! . My body was DEFINITELY speaking up for veggies this week, so this fun fall kale salad has been on repeat for lunch. No chewy kale here ?‍♀, this salad is massaged with olive oil and tahini and loaded up with chickpeas, wild rice, toasted walnuts, and grapes (plus some feta that I added on later). . If you’re looking for ways to ADD veggies to your diet so you can feel your BEST, give this salad a try. It’s one simple way to start feeling amazing ? And let me know in the comments if you want the full recipe posted ☺ . . #nutritiousmeals #eatwholefoods #healthyeating #balancednotclean #dietitian #nutritiousanddelicious #allfoodsfit #eatbetternotless #intuitiveeating #eatrealfood #easycooking #quickmeals #healthierchoices #quickandhealthy #foodfreedom #goodmoodfood #happyandhealthy #healthylifestyle #healthyish #balanceddiet #nourishyourbody #eatmoreveggies #plantbased #saladrecipe #kalesalad #guthealth #eatgoodfeelgood #trynewfood #todayfood #saladinspo

A post shared by Diabetes•Pregnancy•Nutrition (@eat.well.together) on

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Meanwhile, whisk together 1/4 cup olive oil, honey, garlic, goat cheese, parmesan, lemon juice, vinegar, and salt and pepper until a smooth, creamy dressing is formed.
  3. Arrange Brussels sprouts and apples on a sheet pan and drizzle with remaining olive oil, salt, and pepper. Bake for 20 minutes or until Brussels sprouts are crispy and apples are tender and caramelized.
  4. Combine kale, almonds, Brussels sprouts, and apples into a large bowl and toss it with the vinaigrette.

This salad can be served immediately or chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour to allow the kale to soften and marinate in the dressing.

Apple turnovers are a gorgeous pastry to make when you need a sweet treat, a fun surprise brunch item, or just to have around the house. Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need:
4 medium apples
2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
1/2 cup of packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
2 teaspoons of cornstarch
1 sheet of thawed puff pastry
1 egg.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F.
  2. Peel, core, and chop the apples. Put them in a pot with all of the ingredients except for the egg and puff pastry.
  3. On medium-high heat, bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer everything for about 5 minutes or until the apples are tender.
  4. Dust some flour on a work surface and roll out the puff pastry. Cut it into 4 squares.
  5. Mix the egg with 1 teaspoon of water and brush it over the squares.
  6. Spoon the apple mixture into the center, fold over the corner to make a triangle, and cut slits into the pastry to release the steam.
  7. Put the triangles onto a cookie sheet and brush with more egg wash.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

What makes these turnovers so easy is that they utilize store-bought puff pastry instead of homemade, which really saves a lot of time and muscle. Besides the puff pastry, you only need 6 other ingredients to make these incredible desserts!
