How to Make Buttery Movie Theater Popcorn

Snacking on delicious popcorn is one of the main reasons we love going to movie theaters, aside from watching the latest movies, of course. But if you’d rather enjoy a movie on your home screen, here’s how to replicate the flavor of movie theater popcorn without too much effort.

Movie theater popcorn tastes like butter, so it makes sense to use butter to pop the kernels, right? Well, not exactly, because butter contains water that will make your popcorn soggy. The movie theaters actually make popcorn on coconut or canola oil and later add powdered butter flavoring. You can replicate that idea if you want, or you can make your popcorn using clarified butter. This is the butter that’s been carefully cooked until its water evaporated and it’s a much better option for frying anything and making popcorn.

If you’re not a huge fan of butter, but just want a delicious bowl of popcorn, you can make it with pretty much any oil. Coat the kernels in oil, put the lid on the pot, and leave on medium to high temperature until they start popping. Shake a few times to prevent burning and to help the unpopped kernels fall to the bottom and transfer to your favorite bowl. Season with salt and you’re done!
