Have You Tried Mochi Ice Cream?

Have you tried mochi ice cream? This delicious dessert is made of a soft rice dumpling and ice cream filling. “Mochi is a chewy rice cake made from Japanese sweet rice flour — a different grain from the rice we eat,” Wenter Shy, co-owner of California-based bakery Berkeley told How Stuff Works.

Traditionally, mochi has been served as a part of celebratory meals around holidays. It’s considered a delicacy and a rare treat, although today it’s consumed more commonly. There are two methods for making it. One includes steaming the rice, and the other includes drying the rice and making a mochi powder or mochiko before steaming it with water.

Thanks to the starch in rice, mochi becomes sticky when heated. While it’s gluten-free which definitely means a lot to a big group of people, it’s still a dessert and can’t be considered a healthy food staple. However, it depends on the type of rice used if it’s going to have vitamins and minerals.
