Summertime is here, and boy it is hot outside. What do you do with the kids on hot summer days, when you can’t go out to the pool or the park? Try staying at home and turn the kitchen into an amusement park of recipes and delicious food! You can have a fun day cooking with the kids, without it becoming a terrible hassle if you just keep a few simple rules.

#ad The @aldiuk taste of the world campaign got us thinking. Every year we usually take a trip to Brittany in France, this will be the first year in 11 years that we haven’t been! So, instead of getting down about it we spent a day pretending to be in France. . . Well, you can’t visit France without having crepes, so I made them for the girls after their dinner. If you want to try them yourself then here’s how: . . Pour 100g plain flour and pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl Make a well in the middle and crack 2 eggs into the centre. . . Pour about 50ml from the 300ml of semi-skimmed milk and 1 tbsp olive oil then start whisking from the centre. Once all the flour is mixed in, beat until you have a smooth, thick paste. . . Add a splash of milk and whisk to loosen the thick batter. While still whisking, pour in the remaining milk. Continue pouring and whisking until you have a batter that is the consistency of slightly thick single cream. . . Heat the pan over a medium heat and wipe it with oiled kitchen paper. . . Ladle some batter into the pan, tilting the pan to move the mixture around for a thin, even layer. Pour any excess batter into the mixing bowl, return the pan to the heat. . . Leave to cook, for about 30 secs. The pancake should turn golden underneath after about 30 secs and will be ready to turn. . . Hold the pan handle, ease a palette knife under the pancake, quickly lift and flip it over. Cook for another 30 secs before turning out onto a warm plate. Continue with the remaining batter, serving them as you cook. . . Add any topping you like, we chose banana, honey, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. . . . We got all the ingredients from our local @aldiuk #AldiTasteOfTheWorld . . #foodie #foodiesofinstagram #foodies #frenchfood #cookingwithkids #familyadventures #familytime #parentingtribe #parentinglife #frenchstyle

Simple Recipe, Simple Life

Choose recipes that kids can make quickly and easily, without a lot of ingredients or long instructions.

No Stove or Oven

Choose recipes that do not require cooking with heat. Good examples for kid-friendly recipes are cocoa energy balls, fruit smoothies, toasts and sandwiches, fruit salads, or vegetable sticks with dip.

Safety First

This is an opportunity to teach children good safety habits, along with positive eating habits. Teach them how to use the knife carefully, and how to clean after they finish cooking.

Make Room for Creativity

This is the opportunity to let your little ones shine! Nutella toast with cucumber? Popcorn with ketchup? Why not! Go wild and get cooking!
