Are you a fan of tequila? This Mexican liquor made from the agave plant is a popular choice for many around the world due to its versatility and its use in cocktails, such as margaritas.

Did you know tequila, in fact, has different variants that offer up completely distinct flavor profiles and cocktail uses? Here are the three main types of tequila you will find on shelves.

Blanco

This is probably the type of tequila you are most familiar with. This unaged tequila is clear and delivers the purest agave flavors of any variety. The lack of an aging process lets the flavors of the plant—like citrus and herb—shine. It’s best for use in margaritas and other cocktails or even as a shot.

Reposado

Tequila reposado is different from tequila blanco in that it has spent time in oak barrels before being bottled. Usually spending around 3 months to a year in a barrel, this allows the drink to take on wood notes, warming up its flavors and making it smoother to sip. This can be drunk both in cocktails and on ice.

Añejo

If you’re looking for a type of tequila to sip on the rocks, añejo is for you. These tequilas are aged for one to three years in oak barrels, giving them a mellow, sweet, and smoky flavor that is best when enjoyed on its own.
