While most of us are familiar with the common yellow Cavendish bananas that dominate supermarket shelves, the banana family is much more diverse than many realize. In fact, there are over 1,000 banana varieties worldwide! Here are a few fun variations of bananas that might just surprise you with their unique characteristics.

Red Bananas

Red bananas have a striking reddish-purple skin that sets them apart from their yellow counterparts. They have a sweet flavor that hints at raspberry, making them a distinct treat. They are smaller and plumper than the Cavendish bananas, with a creamy flesh that’s rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C.

Lady Finger Bananas

Lady Finger bananas, or “Sugar bananas”, are small, thin varieties known for their exceptionally sweet taste and firm texture. They are much smaller than the typical Cavendish banana, usually only about three to four inches long, making them a perfect, healthy snack for kids or a sweet addition to cereal and fruit salads.

Blue Java Bananas

Imagine a banana that tastes like vanilla ice cream. The Blue Java banana, also known as the “Ice Cream banana”, is just that. These bananas are known for their unusual blue-tinged peels when unripe, which turn a pale yellow when ready to eat.

If you’re planning a trip to Germany, there are many delicious and traditional food staples that you must try along the way. Some may be common across the world, and others less so, but all are sure to be comfort food that you will love. Keep reading for a few things to eat and drink in Germany.

Brezeln (Soft Pretzels)

Brezeln, also known as soft pretzels, are a delicious treat that is a staple in Germany. The pretzels consist of flour, malt, salt, yeast, and water. But, once they’re knotted, boiled, and baked, they turn into a salty treat that will make your tastebuds dance.

Currywurst

This is a popular street food all across Germany and often a guilty pleasure for most. The dish consists of liked wurst (sausage) with tangy curried tomato sauce and lots of spicy curry powder on top, and served with french fries. Some carts will also make a vegetarian version of this munchy food for vegetarians to enjoy.

Bratwurst

Made with a combination of beef, pork, and veal, Bratwurst is known as Germany’s most famous sausage and is widely consumed amongst Germans at home and around the world.

Schnitzel

Perhaps most widely known around the world,  Schnitzel, which is a fried and breaded chicken cutlet, is a staple in Germany. Cooks will often prepare different types of schnitzel by combining it with veal or pork, before breading and frying it.

We all know that eating beans comes with a tiny inconvenience; it will make you gassy. However, there are plenty of other foods that will have the same effect, and you probably didn’t even realize it. Check out some of them below and be ready for some surprises.

Cruciferous Veggies

Cruciferous veggies like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus are rich in raffinose and fiber. Raffinose is a complex sugar that releases gasses as it breaks down in your body, and a similar thing happens with fiber.

Whole Grains

Most whole grains also contain large amounts of raffinose and fiber and have a similar effect on your gut as cruciferous veggies. The only grain that won’t make you gassy is rice.

Watermelon

Surprise, surprise. Watermelon is rich in fructose sugar, and our bodies can have a hard time completely absorbing it, which makes us gassy as a result.

Dairy Products

People who are lactose intolerant will suffer several symptoms as a result of eating dairy products, and gassiness is one of the main ones. Keep in mind that humans can develop lactose intolerance as they age, so many of us might start getting gases from eating milk and yogurts one day.

Soda Drinks

This is a simple one. When you drink carbonated drinks, you are introducing excess gasses to your stomach. Usually, that excess gas goes out through burping, but sometimes it becomes trapped in the gut and causes gasses. The high amount of sugar that our body needs to break down also doesn’t help.

Every dinner party needs delicious appetizers to start the meal and instead of a charcuterie board, which you will see everywhere, why not kick it up a notch by serving these retro appetizers? They might seem a little old school, but you can always modernize them with different toppings, herbs, and spices.

Mushroom Vol-au-Vents

This creamy puffy pastry dish is a great starter for a meal. You can make them super small so your guests won’t get too full, and you can swap out the mushrooms for asparagus or prawns and ricotta. They are versatile and easy to make (if you buy the ready-made pastry).

Prawn Cocktail

You can’t go wrong with a prawn cocktail appetizer, it might be considered a little old-fashioned, but it is still a favorite amongst most people. You can barbecue the prawns to add some more flavor, or if you want to really modernize it, put it on a taco for a bite-size starter.

Sticky Chicken Wings

Sticky chicken wings might be a little messy, but they are a fabulous appetizer for every meal. You can make them with pineapple for a fruity twist or barbecue sauce. Whatever sauce you decide to use, remember to give your guests lots of napkins.

Ah, there’s nothing like a tasty slab of sashimi to inspire the taste buds when you need it most. Indeed, sashimi is one of those foods that screams elegance and class and still manages to breathe an air of authenticity. This is because sashimi is made with precision and professionalism, even when it’s not always obvious. Here’s how authentic sashimi is prepared.

Quality Cuts

The first thing a sashimi chef does is choose the best possible quality fish around. This shows their level of professionalism before they’ve even picked up a knife because detecting a quality fish is a lot easier said than done.

Freezing it

Once they’ve actually decided which fish they’re going to use, the next step is arguably the most important of all—putting the fish into the freezer to kill all of the bacteria and toxins. This is the part that actually makes the raw fish okay for human consumption, and we all know how important that is.

The Presentation

Finally, the main part that we as consumers actually notice—is the presentation of the sashimi. Sashimi chefs are incredibly adept at using knives and carving their masterpieces exactly to their liking. They’re also amazing at adding the perfect seasoning, which is ultimately the final step in the process.

Impossible Foods, a producer of plant-based meat substitutes, is getting ready to launch its meat-free take on hot dogs. Called the Impossible Beef Hot Dog, the product is expected to arrive in grocery stores and food joints in 2024.

Impossible Food has become one of the most recognizable names in the plant-based meat substitutes market with a series of popular products like Impossible Beef, Impossible Burgers, and Impossible Chicken Nuggets. Now, the company wants a slice of the hot dog and sausages market that generated more than $8 billion in sales last year.

Peter McGuinness, CEO and President of Impossible Foods, called hot dogs a “classic part of American culture” and said that it was the company’s longtime goal to add it to the lineup of their meat-free products.

“Our adaptation replicates that quintessential hot dog taste while offering consumers a nutrient-dense product that’s better for the planet. We want people to see that there’s really no compromise when you choose Impossible products. It’s as easy as throwing an Impossible Hot Dog on the grill – right next to an Impossible Burger,” McGuinness added in a press release.

Before releasing the Impossible Beef Hot Dog, the company will give hot dog aficionados an opportunity to try it out. It plans to set up a pop-up shop in Midtown Manhattan on December 16 and hand out free plant-based hot dogs.

One of the most commonly known ideas when it comes to food is that we’re all supposed to eat three meals a day. But is this really true? Have you ever even wondered the reasons behind having to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Is it driven by a natural need of our bodies or a tradition woven through history? According to certain experts, it’s actually not that necessary.

Humble Beginnings

Some of these experts suggest that there’s no real requirement for three daily meals. Instead, this routine emerged due to its predictability. In the past, families often dined together, creating a pattern that furthered this tradition. However, things aren’t quite the same these days.

Changing of Times

In these modern times, most individuals have irregular work hours, often returning home later. This applies to all adults within a household. As a consequence, snacking has become a go-to option due to its speed and convenience. Family dinners have transformed into a rarity, causing dinner to become the most significant meal, while the others are less so.

Unique Individuals

While there are benefits to spreading out meals into three a day, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to eating patterns. Individual needs vary, which is why three meals a day shouldn’t be a requirement.

It’s no secret that the days are getting extremely cold, and that’s because our fun seasonal friend called winter is approaching. Winter’s pending arrival also beckons the incessant need for warm food, and that means plenty of heavy soups. On that particular subject, we’re here to share with you one soup that’s not just heavy, but also one of the most delicious things you’ll ever taste. Enter broccoli and cheddar soup, where you’ll be sold time and time again!

Healthy and Delightful

Right off the bat, one thing that makes broccoli and cheddar soup a great option is that you know you’re getting something healthy. The fact that there’s a strong presence of broccoli in it lets you know that you’ll be taken care of in the nutritional department, at least to an extent. But the real star of the show is the cheddar cheese, which takes the healthiness of the broccoli and elevates it into an otherworldly realm of creamy and savory delight.

Panera’s Option

This delicious soup is something you can definitely make at home, but it’s not the only option available. Let’s be real, some of us want to be wined and dined and don’t feel like attempting it ourselves. If you want to leave the cooking to the pros, we suggest heading on over to Panera Bread, a diner where they make some of the tastiest broccoli and cheddar soup around.

Welcome to the wonderful world of vegetables, where sometimes we come across veggies that aren’t as common as the rest of them. Heck, sometimes we even find veggies that are almost exactly like another one, but just with a twist—such as the purple carrot. If you’ve never heard of purple carrots, or if you’ve heard of them but don’t know anything about them, we’re about to explain everything you need to know about them.

They’re Natural

When people hear of something like a purple carrot, they automatically assume there’s some funny business going on. But no, in this case, there’s absolutely nothing fishy. Purple carrots are about as natural as they come, and they aren’t genetically modified at all. They get their purple color from something called anthocyanins, which actually also provide color to many other things, including blueberries.

They’re Super Healthy

Another great thing to note is that purple carrots—similar to regular orange carrots—are very healthy. Thanks to the anthocyanins, there are many antioxidants that can be found in purple carrots, which means that your immune system will thank you for eating them. So what are you waiting for? Head on down to your local Farmer’s Market and grab some purple carrots!

Onion rings are a staple of fast food. You can get them in almost every fast-food joint or a popular fast-food chain. One notable exception, however, is McDonald’s.

Despite competitors like Burger King and KFC introducing onion rings as a side a while ago, McDonald’s has yet to follow along. And according to TikToker Mike Haracz, former corporate chef at McDonald’s, there is a good reason for that.

Responding to a question by a follower, Haracz explained that McDonald’s doesn’t sell onion rings because of “efficiency”. According to Haracz, McDonald’s is “most profitable when it is most efficient,” and that strive for efficiency even prompted the fast-food chain to start reducing their menu offerings lately.

The reason why making onion rings would make McDonald’s less efficient is because they already have a side option in French fries that works for them and brings them a lot of money. French fries are easier to make, sell like crazy, and come with a huge markup for the fast food chain.

On the other hand, onion rings are more complicated to make, wouldn’t come with a significant markup, and would also cut into French fries consumption. A lot of customers would prefer onion rings over French fries, making them less profitable.

Haracz concludes that McDonald’s will likely introduce onion rings as a limited option at some point, but you shouldn’t expect that to happen anytime soon.
