Classic Carrot Cake

Perhaps the most famous vegetable cake, the classic carrot cake is beloved for its moist texture and rich flavor. Packed with grated carrots, this cake gets an added sweetness and a lovely, dense texture from the vegetables. Top your carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for an added tangy contrast.

Zucchini Chocolate Cake

Zucchini chocolate cake is a decadent, moist cake that cleverly uses zucchini for a rich texture without overpowering the chocolate taste. The zucchini adds moisture, making the cake incredibly soft. Once baked, it can be finished with a chocolate ganache or frosting for an extra chocolatey experience.

Beetroot Red Velvet Cake

Red velvet cake gets a healthy twist with the addition of beetroot, which enhances the cake’s natural red color and adds an earthy sweetness. Once cooled, layer with cream cheese frosting for a sweet finish. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try beetroots in brownies.

The Great British Baking Show is a charming blend of friendly competition and baking gems. It has inspired countless viewers to explore the art of baking. But if you’ve watched so many episodes you forgot what you wanted to test out in your kitchen, here are a few classics to revisit.

Victoria Sponge Cake

A quintessential British treat, the Victoria Sponge Cake is as elegant as it is delicious. This light and airy cake is sandwiched with a layer of jam and dusted with powdered sugar. The key to a perfect Victoria Sponge is achieving a light, well-risen cake. This requires careful creaming of the sugar and butter and gentle folding of the flour.

Bakewell Tart

This classic English dessert features a shortcrust pastry base, a layer of fruity jam, and a frangipane filling, topped off with sliced almonds. You can experiment with different types of jam, though traditionalists insist on raspberry.

Battenberg Cake

The Battenberg Cake is made up of pink and yellow sponge cake squares, assembled in a checkerboard pattern, and held together with apricot jam. The entire cake is then wrapped in marzipan for a sugary finish. Making a Battenberg Cake at home can be a challenge, but the result is a stunning and delicious dessert.

Making homemade chocolate can be a fun and sweet culinary adventure, but it’s not the right fit for people who like to rush things. Patience is key when it comes to making chocolate at home, and here are the three most important parts of the process that you should take as slowly as possible.

Use Low Heat

Melting chocolate takes a lot of time and patience, and you can ruin everything by trying to speed things up. Most people do this by turning up the heat, but that’s a huge no-no because you should use low or medium temperature and occasionally stir your chocolate as it melts.

Wet Molds

Before pouring your melted chocolate into the molds, make sure to wait until it cools down. Pouring hot chocolate inside isn’t the best idea, and it’s also important to check if your molds are completely dry because the chocolate will suck up the moisture if that’s not the case.

No Freezing

You’ll want to taste your chocolate as soon as possible after going through all the previous steps, but good things come to those who wait. Putting your chocolate inside the freezer may be the fastest way to cool it down, but it could also make it grainy as the oils separate, so it’s best avoided.

Christmas is a time for indulgence, and it’s a time of year when chocolate really comes into its own. From cakes to cookies to after dinner sweets, you’ll find foods with a high cocoa content around every table at this time of year. Here are three traditional chocolates to include in your Christmas festivities.

Pralines

Filled with a delicious hazelnut-based cream, pralines are many people’s favorite when they’re looking for a rich and indulgent after dinner chocolate. You can find pralines in white, milk, or dark chocolate, or sometimes a combination of the three.

Mint Chocolate

The archetypal after dinner chocolate, mint chocolate can be a nice palate cleanser when a lot of rich food is being consumed. It’s not one to consume loads of, so if you’re looking for a small, sophisticated treat seek out some good quality mint chocolate.

Dark Chocolate

Most children will turn their noses up at the offering of dark chocolate, but if you’re drinking something sweet and rich like port or brandy, a good quality dark chocolate can accompany this beautifully. Seek out bars with a cocoa content of 60% or higher, and make sure that cocoa or cocoa butter is the first ingredient, rather than sugar.
