This Poached Pear and Stem Ginger Dessert is a Winter Winner

Ginger delivers a delicious warming hit that is perfect at the coldest times of the year, so go ahead and make this deliciously simple dessert of poached pears and stem ginger served with nutmeg-infused cream.

Ingredients (to serve 4):

  • 6 pears
  • 3 pieces of stem ginger, plus one tablespoon of syrup from the jar
  • 1/2 cup of red wine
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • Cream, to serve

Instructions:

  1. Slice the pears in half horizontally, and slice the stem ginger into strips.
  2. Heat the wine, water, cinnamon, and sugar in a pan. Once it’s steaming, carefully lower the pears and ginger into the liquid.
  3. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, then stir in the ground ginger. Cook for a further 2 minutes, then remove from the heat.
  4. Gently heat the cream in a pan, and stir in the nutmeg once it’s heated through. Remove from the heat and serve alongside the pears.

This classic elegant dessert is a real crowd-pleaser, and can be ready in under half an hour. It can also be made ahead in advance and heated when you’re ready to serve.
