There is nothing wrong with buying meat in bulk and freezing it. It can be cost-effective practice, but more importantly, you won’t have to go to the grocery store every time you are cooking a meat dish.

Another great thing is that freezing ensures the meat retains all its qualities and nutrients. That is, of course, if you do it right. If you don’t, you risk setting yourself up for disappointment once you take it out of the freezer. To avoid the latter, check out some of the common mistakes you should avoid next time you are freezing meat.

Freezing Large Portions at Once

When you bring meat home from the grocery store, don’t store it in the fridge as it is. Instead, cut it into meal-sized portions. This will help it freeze faster and make the thawing process a lot easier.

Freezing the Meat in the Original Package

The original package of the meat is usually not suitable for freezing and might cause the meat to have ice burns. So what you need to do is wrap the meat properly using a Ziploc bag, plastic wrap, or aluminum foil.

Not Checking Out the Freezer Temperature

Before storing the meat in the freezer, you need to check to see if it’s set to the proper temperature. It should always sit at 0F or below.

Leaving the Frozen Meat in the Freezer for Too Long

Despite being frozen, meat in your freezer will eventually start losing some of its quality. For example, frozen ground beef starts deteriorating in quality after four months, while frozen fish is not as flavorful after eight months.
