We’ve all been there. And if we’re being honest, probably more than once. You open your fridge and reach for your avocado only to find it’s brown and gone bad. Avocados are a delicious and nutritious addition to many meals and it’s a shame to have them go to waste. Here are three great tips to help you keep them fresh longer.
The Refrigerator Method
For ripe avocados you’re not quite ready to use, the refrigerator should be your go-to storage solution. Whole, ripe avocados should last for 3-5 days when stored in the crisper drawer of your fridge.
The Lemon Juice Technique
If you’ve already cut into your avocado, oxidation becomes your enemy. To combat this, you should brush the exposed flesh with lemon juice. The citric acid in the lemon juice should slow down the browning process. After applying the juice, wrap the avocado tightly in plastic wrap before refrigerating.
The Onion Hack
For a unique approach to avocado storage, you should try the onion method. Place a cut avocado in an airtight container with a few chunks of red onion. The sulfur compounds released by the onion should slow down the oxidation process, keeping your avocado greener for longer.
