The Best Basic Tomato Sauce

Tomato sauce is one of the most basic yet essential sauces to know how to make. And once you get it down, you can make it at the drop of a hat. This sauce is great for simple spaghetti, a baked ziti, or even used as a pizza sauce. The key to this sauce is to follow each step and to use the freshest ingredients possible. Let’s get started!

Ingredients

To make this sauce you will, of course, need tomatoes. Depending on how much sauce you need will depend on how many tomatoes you have. Try to get the freshest and ripest tomatoes you can, this will make the whole sauce taste best. Then you just need garlic, olive oil, and red chili flakes and that’s it!

Method

  1. Score the tomatoes to get the skin off easier after you blanch them
  2. Place them in boiling water just for enough time that you see the skin start to come off
  3. Dunk them in an ice bath, peel them, and remove the seeds
  4. Heat some oil and throw in the garlic cloves and chili flakes
  5. Once the oil is fragrant, toss in the tomatoes and let them melt
  6. Once the sauce is a smooth consistency, you’re done!
