While you may think that you need to travel to Italy to indulge in an authentic pizza, with the right ingredients, you can create the perfect Sicilian-style pizza in your own kitchen. Here’s how you can craft a delicious and authentic Sicilian pizza at home.

Bake the Base

Whether you pre-purchase the pizza base or make your own, you’ll need to ensure that it is well-coated in oil and baked in the oven until it becomes puffy and rises. Make sure to keep checking on your base and ensure that it remains flat and that it doesn’t become too oily. Blot out any areas where there is too much moisture.

Prep the Toppings

Once your base is ready, set it aside to cool for around 20 to 30 minutes. Then, cut some squash into spirals and grate your mozzarella cheese. Cut up some slices of salami and pour one and a quarter cups of pizza sauce into a jug or container so you can pour it later.

Time to Put it All Together

Take a spoon and spread the sauce evenly across the pizza base. Once you have the amount of sauce you want, sprinkle the cheese evenly before adding your slices of squash and salami. Finally, bake the pizza until the bottom is golden brown and enjoy.

Pizza is popular for so many reasons. Not only is it incredibly delicious, but it’s also a “fun” food. Why is that, you may ask? Well, pizza allows you to make things interesting with the various toppings you may choose to put on it. In this article, we’re going to discuss some of the funky pizza toppings you may not have heard of. Have you ever tried any of these?

Mac N’ Cheese Slice

First, let’s start off with none other than the infamous mac n’ cheese slice. If you’re looking for extra cheese and carbs up the wazoo (as if the pizza crust wasn’t enough), this slice has got you covered. Good thing it’s about as addicting as anything else.

BBQ Chicken Slice

If you’re looking for some added protein in your pizza, why not try the BBQ chicken slice? We actually go for the veggie chicken version, but you’re more than welcome to have regular chicken if that suits you.

Spinach Slice

Finally, a spinach slice is an excellent choice for you if you’re really trying to feel good. Let’s be real, pizza isn’t super healthy, so why not make yourself feel a little bit better knowing you’re getting some healthy spinach nutrients?

Homemade pizza can be a fantastic meal to make with kids, but all too often the final results are disappointing – tough dough, under-flavored tomato sauce and dry toppings. Check out these tips on how to make the best homemade pizza ever.

Taste The Tomato Sauce

All too often, an unexciting tomato sauce is the cause of lackluster homemade pizza. Follow a recipe, rather than just using tomato purƩe or store-bought sauce. There are some incredibly simple ones out there, that will only take 15 minutes, but the difference in flavor will be noticeable.

Less Is More

Most fancier pizza places offer pizzas with a maximum of five toppings, and a lot of care is taken to ensure that these flavors work together. If youā€™re cooking with kids, donā€™t let them throw everything in your store cupboard over the pizza base. Check out the menus at your favorite pizza restaurant and think about which flavors will go well.

Donā€™t Forget The Oil

The finishing touch of every homemade pizza should be a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil over the toppings. Not only will this intensify the flavor, it will also help stop the pizza from drying out. If you forget to drizzle just before it goes in the oven, you can always do it when itā€™s fresh from the oven and about to go onto your plate.

We canā€™t turn water into wine, but we can turn flour and water into pizza! Pizza is one of the easiest things to order when you donā€™t feel like cooking, but nothing tastes quite as impressive as one youā€™ve made yourself from scratch. The artā€”and yes, it is an artā€”of pizza-making may seem daunting and complex, but we’ve got you covered.

Ingredients:

ā€¢ 700 milliliter warm water
ā€¢ 1 kilogram white bread flour
ā€¢ 7 gram dried yeast
ā€¢ 1 pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Fill a bowl with warm water and add salt and part of the flour. Add the yeast and stir. Add the rest of the flour and start to combine using your hands.
  2. Once the mixture begins to form a sticky dough, remove it from the bowl and place it on a flat surface dusted with flour.
  3. Knead the dough until it becomes springy and smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a large flour-dusted bowl and flour the top of it. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and place it in a warm room for about an hour until the dough has doubled in size.
  5. Once ready, place the dough on a flour-dusted surface and knead it around a bit to push the air out with your hands (AKA knocking back the dough).
  6. Take a ball of dough and spread it out to make your pizza bases. The leftover bases can be frozen.

A popular concept of the modern era that people love to talk about it is “less is more”. This actually isn’t a new idea. People have endorsed it since the dawn of time, just in different ways. But nevertheless, it’s still an important idea to talk about, because for whatever reason we humans still love going overboard with just about everything. This is definitely true when it comes to pizza, and we’re here to say that that’s a problem. Because less is truly more when it comes to pizza.

Chill With the Toppings

When we make custom pies, we sometimes find ourselves going a bit wild with the toppings. We’ll throw on some mushrooms, then add some garlic because why not, and then before we know it we’ve turned it into an all-out veggie pizza. We’ll even toss on some pepperoni for good measure.

Don’t Lose Sight of the Main Attraction

We’re sorry for all the lactose intolerant types, but the main attraction with pizza is the cheese and sauce. Sure, the bread is darn important too, but if the sauce and cheese aren’t right, the pizza has lost. In order to make a good pizza, you gotta keep things simple. Instead of adding more toppings, add more cheese and sauce. Don’t lose sight of the main attraction and you’ll be good to go.

While there’s nothing wrong with frozen pizza and it makes for an easy meal when you don’t have the time or energy to cook and you don’t want to order take-out, it’s nothing like a fresh pizza. Frozen pizza usually isn’t as crispy and the cheese isn’t as melty. But with these hacks, you won’t even realize the pizza came out out of a box.

Cook Pizza in an Air Fryer

Air fryers are amazing for getting crispy fries or transforming leftovers and when it comes to frozen pizzas, air frying them makes the crust crispier. Individual slices or personal pies work best in air fryers.

Grill Pizza

To mimic the taste of a wood-fired oven, grill pizza outdoors. This will give the pizza a fresher taste and more flavors.

Get a Pizza Stone or Cast Iron Pan

What makes restaurant pizza so delicious is that it’s often cooked in a specially designed oven that reaches up to 800 F. Since this isn’t possible at home, heat-retaining tools like pizza stones and cast iron pans can give the same feel.

Make Pizza in a Waffle Iron

Waffle irons are good for much more than just wafflesā€”you can cook pizza in them. Just be sure to place the pizza between parchment paper to prevent a mess.

Add Toppings

Pizza is always better with toppings and you can spruce up frozen pizza with your favorite toppings like anchovies, pineapple, peppers, and pepperoni. And it doesn’t have to stop thereā€”you can add olive oil, cheese, or a melted butter and garlic mix to the crust.

One of the most common arguments we hear when it comes to “who has the best food” seems to always go back to pizza. Perhaps it’s because pizza is so delicious, or perhaps it’s because it’s so practical, but many people from all over the world swear that their city’s pizza is the best. So which U.S. cities reign supreme in the pizza department?

New York City, New York

We’d be remiss if we didn’t put New York City on this list. New Yorkers swear by their pizza and they’ve honestly got a pretty good point. Being that NYC is a melting pot of cultures, backgrounds, and cooking methods, it’s no surprise that the collective New York zeitgeist was able to formulate one of the greatest pizza cultures on the planet.

Chicago, Illinois

As great as New York’s pizza is, if you talk to someone from Chicago, they’ll laugh in your face. Chicagoans are persistent and stubborn about the idea that their pizza is actually the best that America has to offer. Known for their iconic deep-dish slice, Chicago pizzerias truly are one of the kind, and we truly recommend grabbing a slice if you’re ever in the area.

Making a homemade pizza is not always easy, especially if you donā€™t do it often. It requires practice, skill, and good-quality ingredients, so itā€™s often easier to just order one from your favorite pizza place. If you want to perfect making pizza at home anyway, hereā€™s a great tip from Jimmy Kimmel.

Expert Advice

The TV host knows how to make the best pizza and he shared his knowledge in a recent episode of Hot Ones. He said that he got the advice from professional chef Chris Bianco and the tip is to ā€œbe sparing with the ingredientsā€. Kimmel described how he used to love to put lots of toppings on his pizzas in the past but has since learned that limiting them leads to a better crust.

According to Kimmel, the best pizza sauce is made with perfect tomatoes, and he uses Bianco DiNapoli canned tomatoes. The best marinara is made with garlic, salt, basil, olive oil, and tomatoes. This rich sauce will bring your pizza to another level!

Kimmel has met many amazing chefs throughout his career so we never regret listening to his cooking advice. He even owns a brick pizza oven at home, so we know his pizza standards are pretty high!

Italy is famous for pizza, but one entrepreneur noticed a hole in this otherwise very saturated market. Former pizza maker (or pizzaiolo) Massimo Bucolo noticed that there are plenty of places to get pizza in Rome, but virtually none of them work at night. “There was a hole in the market. Although Rome is an important city, there was nothing [foodwise] available through the night,” he told CNN Travel. “We never wanted to compete with a classic pizzeria.”

Thatā€™s how he came up with Mr. Go, the first pizza vending machine. Technically, what Mr. Go makes isnā€™t traditional pizza, as it uses piadina flatbread instead of dough. Bucolo admits that making real pizza in the vending machine would be impossible because that process requires a skilled chef and a wood-fired oven.

The first Mr. Go sits in a residential part of Rome, the capital of Italy, called Piazza Bologna. Bucolo is testing the market by putting the machine nearby a student area and a hospital, as he believes people there need nighttime food options. You can choose among four types of pizza, including a classical Margherita, Quattro formaggi with four types of cheese, spicy salami, and pancetta (basically premium bacon).

If youā€™re a pizza fanatic, youā€™ve probably read about the many outdoor pizza ovens that have recently taken the home-cooking market by storm. You may be satisfied with the pizzas youā€™ve made in your home oven, but thereā€™s a reason people are raving about these amazing, portable devices.

The Heat

Unless you have a professional kitchen, your oven cannot reach the temperatures of up to 950 degrees Fahrenheit that these machines can. This opens up a whole new world for outdoor cooking.

The Speed

Because of these high heats, you can pump out a fully cooked 12 or 16-inch pizza in as little as 90 seconds. Sounds pretty amazing for a pizza party, doesnā€™t it?

The Texture

Once again, heat plays to your favor here, as the extreme temperatures allow the underbelly of the pie to crisp up perfectly on the pizza stone, while the outer rims puff up into a soft, airy, and delightful crust.

The Flavor

All this makes for restaurant-quality pizza you can make in your own back yard. The charred crust, perfectly sizzling toppings, and melted cheese make a combination youā€™ll never forget.

Itā€™s Fun!

Learning how to churn out pizzas as if you own your own restaurant is fun, no matter how you slice it!
