There are a lot of different unique cookies out there, and gingerbread cookies are a great example. Sometimes, you need a break from the same old thing, which is why gingerbread cookies can be such a great option. If you’re looking for some guidance regarding how to make them, here are some tips to ensure that they turn out perfectly.

Keep the Butter Soft

If you prefer your gingerbread cookies soft, be sure to use softened butter, not melted. Just remember to take the butter out of the fridge a day before baking, and it will be just right.

Get Creative With Spices

While gingerbread cookies traditionally include ginger, cinnamon, and cloves, you can definitely play around with different spices and their amounts to create your very own special flavor.

Chill the Dough

After mixing the dough, it’s important to let it chill. The dough needs to be firm, or your cookies might lose their shape while baking. And that would be a bit of a bummer, especially if you’ve used fun molds to create special shapes.

Store in Containers

Once you’ve followed all the steps and achieved the perfect cookies, keep them in tightly sealed containers, like jars with lids, for up to a week. Well, that’s if they manage to last that long!

There are lots of ways to tweak your cookie recipe to your taste—make it crunchier, softer, cakier, or the best: chewier. If you’re someone who loves your cookies especially chewy, then you might be looking for ways to make your recipe serve that purpose. Luckily, there’s plenty of ways to control for texture to your own liking. Here’s how to make your cookies extra chewy.

Incorporate More Moisture

One thing that has a big effect on your dough’s chewiness is its moisture content. More moisture will make your cookies chewier … to a point. You don’t want to add too much wetness or your cookies will run and spread, making them crunchy instead of chewy.

There are a few ways to add moisture. First, you can swap out some of the white sugar for brown sugar, which has molasses, or even add a teaspoon to a tablespoon or molasses or syrup if you need the white sugar. You can try using two yolks instead of a full egg, as the fatty yolks won’t dry out as fast as egg whites. Finally, you can try replacing some or all of the butter with shortening: butter has water that can evaporate in the oven, while shortenings full-fat makeup will retain its moisture better.

Technique

One thing many professional bakers do is let their dough set in the fridge for an hour or so. This will also help promote chewiness. Finally, try experimenting with varied baking times and temperatures. Depending on your recipe, you may find there is a profound effect on your cookie’s texture.

Baking a perfect batch of cookies can be a challenging task for beginners because there are plenty of small tricks to learn in order to perfect your technique. Cookies that spread in the oven is one of the most common baking problems that most beginners will face, so here are a few tips that will help you prevent that from happening.

Chill the Dough

The main reason why most recipes instruct you to chill the cookie dough is that the dough is will be too warm or too soft after mixing. In that case, it’s best to leave it in the fridge to chill overnight or at least for one or two hours.

Adding Too Many Liquid Ingredients

Measuring ingredients correctly is the most important step if you want to bake the perfect cookies, and this is best done by using a kitchen scale. One of the reasons why your cookies are spreading in the oven is because you used too many liquid ingredients like sugar, eggs, milk, and more.

Hot Baking Sheet

When baking more than one batch of cookies always let your baking sheet cool in between batches because placing cookie dough onto a hot baking sheet can easily ruin the cookies.

Oven Temperature

Last but not least, use a thermometer to check oven temperature because the cookies will likely spread if it isn’t hot enough.

Forgetting to add baking soda in your cookie recipe results in flat, dense cookies. Most of us have made that mistake before and now know better. But what happens if you accidentally put too much baking soda in the dough?

Baking soda is the ingredient that makes cookies fluffy and chewy. Contrary to what you may think, more baking soda doesn’t mean better cookies. Adding too much of it will make your cookies lose the right texture and taste. Baking soda is an active ingredient, because it releases carbon dioxide and spreads the dough, which is exactly why you need to put the right amount in every recipe.

What if you already put too much baking soda? First, see if you can get some of it out. If that’s impossible and if you know how much more you’ve added, try increasing the amount of the other ingredients. This can work if you mixed up the measurements, for example, if you put a tablespoon of baking soda instead of a teaspoon.

If your dough is already mixed, if you don’t know how much more baking soda you’ve added, or if your cookies are already in the oven, we don’t really have good news. You can wait and see how they turn out but chances are you’re going to have to start the whole job over.

New York City-based cookie artist Grace Gaylord uses food coloring and edible glitter to decorate the cookies she makes. Nothing unusual about that, right? Some people apparently have a problem with a price tag she puts on them, however, thinking that $10 per cookie is too much. Check them out and decide if they’re right or wrong.

She’s known on social media like Instagram and TikTok as The Graceful Baker. Her videos show the process of decorating beautiful cookies and she doesn’t hesitate to share how much time and money she invests to make them.

One of the videos went viral with 3.3 million TikTok likes and many people commented on the price. Gaylord is very transparent about the cost of her work and the time it takes her to do it, so she feels that a price of $10 per custom cookie is justified.

“The three biggest misconceptions surrounding this video: I sell my cookies (I do not; I am a content creator); the $10 price was for the emoji cookie in the viral video (it was not: it was for the mermaid tail cookie in the video it was responding to); and that I was quoting my actual salary (the answer was all a hypothetical scenario),” she tells Bored Panda in an interview.
