Whether you’ve been eating Mexican food your whole life or you just discovered it, it’s not difficult to recreate the meals at home. With a little practice and some knowledge about the staple ingredients it uses, you can easily become an expert in Mexican cuisine. Let’s start with some of the most common ingredients.

Tortillas

Mexican cuisine wouldn’t be the same without tortillas. They are used for tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, and more. There are different types of tortillas and it’s crucial to choose the right one if you want your dish to be a success.

Spices

Just like any other cuisine, Mexican cuisine has its own set of spices that help complete the flavor. Among them are cumin, coriander, garlic powder, cinnamon, chili powder, etc.

Chili Peppers

Most dishes from Mexican cuisine use at least one type of chili pepper, and some use more of them. Varieties include jalapenos, habaneros, serranos, etc. They can go into virtually any Mexican dish and only improve it.

Beans

Beans provide a great protein base for many dishes. You can use black or pinto beans and always get the right flavor. Beans are especially great for side dishes. Try dishes like refined beans or frijoles de olla (Mexican pinto beans).

As far as pantry staples go, we’re pretty sure most people have a can of peas sitting in the cupboard or frozen peas chilling in the fridge. Though they are perfect to serve on their own as a simple side, these dishes make the little green guys the star of the show. All we are saying is give peas a chance!

Smashed Pea Toast

Who said avocados should get all the glory when it comes to toast? This pea version of the classic is more sophisticated, in our opinion.

Pea Pesto Pasta

We’re not sure if we’re getting tongue-tied from trying to say “pea pesto pasta” or because we’re salivating from this deliciousness!

Perky Pea Soup

This list would be completely incomplete without the mention of pea soup. Top it off with some crispy peas to add texture and crunch.

Summer Pea Salad

There’s something about peas that just symbolizes summer, so naturally, they work wonderfully in salads. The freshness of the peas pairs beautifully with the sweet balsamic.

Pea Risotto

Risotto is pure comfort food, and the only thing that could improve it is peas. It’s basically hap-pea-ness on a plate.

There are some ingredients in your pantry that may help you survive the zombie apocalypse. Vinegar is probably one of them. The sour solution comes in a variety of forms, with each having its own unique flavor. Some do better in salad dressings, while others will make your kitchen counter sparkle. Want to know which vinegar to use when? We’ve got you covered.

Red Wine Vinegar

As the name suggests, fermented red wine is the key ingredient in this vinegar. The liquid has a subtle sweetness that offsets the sharp flavor, making it ideal for vinaigrettes. Red wine vinegar is also fantastic in marinades as it aids in tenderizing meat.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Arguably the most popular member of the family at the moment, apple cider vinegar is chock-full of health benefits. Many drink the solution (neat, or diluted with water) to aid in their digestion and it also helps to regulate blood sugar by improving insulin function.

Balsamic Vinegar

Known for its dark appearance and syrupy consistency, balsamic vinegar gets darker, sweeter, and thicker the longer it stands. Combined with its partner in crime, olive oil, the duo can be drizzled over salad or soaked up with crusty bread.

Rice Wine Vinegar

Rice wine vinegar is less acidic than its counterparts and is a staple in Asian cooking. Add it to your stir-fry, noodle dishes, and soups to inject some sharpness.

White Vinegar

This is probably the most versatile vinegar on the list. The intense, sharp solution is used in ketchup to give it that tang, and adding a splash into simmering water will ensure perfect poached eggs. White vinegar also makes a fantastic cleaning solution. Combine one cup of vinegar with three cups of water and watch how everything shines.

Buying food in bulk is one of the most popular money-saving methods, but there are cases when it can do you more harm than good. Some types of food are best bought in smaller quantities, and that happens to be the case with these five.

Coffee

Huge packages of coffee won’t stay fresh for too long, and you should avoid them if you want to wake up to a perfectly fresh cup of coffee every morning.

Flour

Unless you’re baking on a daily basis, buying huge bags of floor won’t do you any good. If you keep them around for too long, they’ll suck up moisture and eventually go bad.

Herbs and Spices

Just like coffee, herbs and spices won’t taste so great if you stick to them for too long. They’ll lose their flavor after some time and be practically useless afterward.

Cooking Oils

Cooking oils shouldn’t be bought in bulk because they can become a safety hazard. They tend to rancid and oxidize pretty fast, and it can be bad for your health to use the same bottle for too long.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds shouldn’t be bought in bulk for the same reason as cooking oils. They contain a significant amount of natural oils, but you can make them last for longer by keeping them in a dark, cool place.

Can anyone honestly say they don’t like garlic bread? It’s warm, buttery, and delicious, truly perfect comfort food. It can be eaten on its own or paired with many different foods and it will make your home smell amazing. For some people, there’s no such thing as too much garlic, so they put it in everything and overpower other flavors. This chef found the perfect balance between using a lot of garlic and not going overboard.

Jake Cohen’s garlic bread uses four whole heads of garlic, which sounds insane, right? In reality, his bread is one of the most delicious things in the world. His trick is that he roasts the garlic in the oven on medium to low heat for an hour before moving on. This way, the garlic loses its sharpness and becomes rich and creamy.

@jakecohen

Squeezing roasted garlic is my k!nk. #garlicbread

♬ Italian Dinner Party – Italian Restaurant Music of Italy

You may not like the idea of needing an hour and a half to make this garlic bread when you’re already hungry, but good things often take time. It’s worth planning in advance and waiting a bit because the result is the most flavorful garlic bread you’ve ever tasted. Other ingredients Cohen uses include butter, salt, fresh basil, and red pepper. Check out the process on his TikTok channel.

TikTok is suddenly becoming the first place many people head to when looking for food inspiration, and it’s not difficult to see why. This social media platform is constantly introducing us to delicious new dishes, and here are three that everyone is raving about this winter.

Custard Toast

Custard or yogurt toast is definitely the most popular viral dish to emerge on TikTok this winter. You just need eggs, Greek yogurt, and some milk or maple syrup to make the custard mixture, and you can use it as a topping on your toast before baking it.

Grated Egg Avocado Toast

Speaking of toast trends that emerged on TikTok this winter, grated egg avocado toast is putting a twist on this classic brunch staple. Eggs and avocado toast are a common combo, and TikTok users came up with a brand-new way to eat it by using grated eggs as a topping.

They’re super-easy to make, and you only need some Weetabix biscuits, yogurt, and add-ins of your choosing such as fruits or biscuits, to get things done.

Overnight Weetabix

Most of the popular TikTok recipes that emerged this winter are putting a twist on our breakfast, and that’s the case with overnight Weetabix “cheesecakes”. They’re super-easy to make, and you only need some Weetabix biscuits, yogurt, and add-ins of your choosing such as fruits or biscuits, to get things done.
