]]>Fertilizer or nutrient-rich soil, from a hardware store or garden shop, often times is expensive and actually has fewer nutrients than natural compost provides. When eating produce and any food that spoils, we end up producing waste. The peelings from a carrot, the core of an apple, egg shells: these are all items that many put in the trash but are full of nutrients to create rich soil.
Composting is an easy way to impact the environment as an individual, by producing less waste. If you are not attracted to the idea of stirring or using your own compost there are plenty of no waste alternatives. Many towns have co-ops or community gardens that you can donate your food waste too. The co-op will use your compost and you still get to reduce the amount of trash that your household creates. Some larger cities are even beginning compost pick up services, similar to recycling and trash pick up, to make composting as convenient as possible for you!

]]>Borage flowers need sunlight and water but if you make sure they are steadily taken care of they produce beautiful small flowers. The borage flower has a very subtle and light flower of freshness that will not cloud any flavors of your dish.
Zucchini flowers are a heartier flower and are able to absorb flavors and spices of a dish as though they have been marinated. Zucchini flowers can also be used as a beautiful shell, like a pita pocket, for a roasted filling. Flowers are a beautiful way to enhance a meal while also staying healthy and fresh!

If you are trying to eat a lower fat food, sweet potatoes are actually less fat and have around 100 calories on average while regular potatoes have around 170 calories. If you are trying to fulfill protein requirements, regular potatoes have on average three more grams of protein than sweet potatoes.
Neither type of potato is low in carbohydrates but if you decide to prepare the root in olive oil and roast rather than fry you can preserve more of the positive nutrients. While neither is a particularly light food potatoes are nutrient dense, are filling and are a great source of energy.

]]>In visiting a very small town called Mineral Springs, about an hour outside of Madison, WI, the world’s largest (and maybe only) mustard museum resides. The mustard museum hosts the history of mustard, paraphernalia and all of the different uses, but the museum also presents how many flavors and varieties of mustard are possible.
Simply, mustard is made of ground/crushed mustard seeds, lemon, water, vinegar, wine, and salt. But when you make your own mustard you can choose to add spices, different types of vinegar and different types of citrus (acidic component). For instance, traditional Irish mustard is mixed with whiskey, stout and honey. Dijon mustard is made with white wine or unripe grape juice rather than vinegar.
Regardless you can experiment with different kinds of vinegar and spices to create your own delicious mustard and be sure to leave that French’s mustard packet in the dust.

]]>When preparing shrimp cocktail purchase fresh, larger sized, shelled shrimp. You first will devein the shrimp by cutting out the veins along the back center line, but without fully removing the shell. Then rinse and cook.
For shrimp cocktail, you can boil or fry the shrimp but we recommend steaming because there is less of a chance of overcooking the shrimp. As soon as you start to see the shrimp float in the boiling water (after just a couple minutes) remove and put on ice. This is a very fast process.
Allow for at least a half hour on ice and in a freezer for the shrimp to cool.
While you are waiting, make the dipping sauce. The most simple sauce is just ketchup and horseradish to taste. Then make sure to cut some lemon lightly squeeze over the shrimp.
Lastly, pair with a nice cocktail such as a dirty martini or Bloody Mary, and enjoy!

]]>The post You should Start Pickling Watermelon Rinds appeared first on thedancingcucumber.com.
]]>First off, you will want to eat or scoop out all of the watermelon meat from the melon. Next, make sure to cut your rinds into thin small strips. The smaller the rind pieces are, the easier it is for the entire section to soak up the pickling spices and have an even flavor throughout.
The ingredients you will need besides the rind are white vinegar, salt, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon. The process is a fairly lengthy one so make sure that you aren’t in a time crunch to have your pickles ready.
Let your cut rind pieces soak in water that ⅓ cup of salt has been dissolved in. You will want to let the rind soak in the brine for at least 12 hours. After the rind has soaked drain the pieces and rinse them off with plain water.
Then, on a stove top, combine two cups of white vinegar, two cups of water, four cups of sugar, one teaspoon of whole cloves, one sliced lemon and 4 cinnamon sticks.
After bringing this mixture to a boil add the rind pieces and bring the pot down to a simmer. Cook all these components for about a half hour or until the rind is clear.
Then, add the concoction to sealable containers and wait to eat until at room temperature. You can repeat this process with any melon rind!
