Africa is home to a rich and vibrant culinary heritage. In addition to the interesting and varied dishes on offer, they also have a great many fantastic raw fruits and vegetables most people in the West have never heard of.

Let’s take a look some exotic African fruits you’ve got to try.

Baobab

The fruit of the famous baobab tree has three times as much vitamin C as oranges, 50% more calcium than there is in spinach, and many more vitamin, minerals and antioxidants. Often eaten raw, it is also eaten with milk, sugar, honey or water.

Ackee

Native to Africa, ackee is now the national fruit of Jamaica. The creamy flesh of the interior can be eaten and is slightly bitter to the taste. But the seeds and the outside skin are toxic, so make sure you steer clear of those!

Horned Melon

Distinctive by its green jelly interior and a favorite throughout Africa, horned melon is said to taste like a banana. It is high in fiber and vitamin C.

Kola Nut

This is the fruit that originally created the coca cola drinks. High in caffeine and protein, it certainly can help get you moving. It is often a nice addition in a drink if you need a boost, or can simply be chewed for a little extra energy.

German cuisine doesn’t quite have the global prestige of its French and Italian cousins—but perhaps it should have. There is a whole great variety of delicious dishes to try, and you never know—it might become your favorite!

Maultaschen

A bit like ravioli due to their square shape, maultaschen are pasta parcels filled with minced meat, sauerkraut or spinach, and usually seasoned with pepper, parsley and nutmeg.

Flammkuchen

Flammkuchen is a thinly rolled, rectangular shaped dough topped with white cheese, crème fraîche, finely sliced onions and lardons. It is then baked in a wood-fire oven for a perfectly crispy finish.

Here are three weird pizza toppings from around the world that are just considered ordinary where they’re eaten!

Canned Tuna (Europe)

While it might sound weird to put canned tuna on pizza, this is actually a common topping in countries like Germany and Spain! It’s often combined with onion to make a flavor combination that you probably wouldn’t expect to find on a pie.

Green peas are an everyday pizza topping in the country of Brazil—believe it or not. Often combined with other toppings, a typical homemade Brazilian pizza will have a smattering of green peas placed on top of the cheese and tomato sauce.

Smoked Fish (Russia)

Russians love smoked fish, and it turns out that their preference for this culinary treat extends to pizza. The popular Mockba pizza includes smoked herring, sardines, tuna, mackerel, and salmon in what can only be described as a pie that’s an acquired taste.
