It’s fall season, and everyone needs a bit of pumpkin spice in their life. Whether you are making a latte, baking a pie, or having oats for breakfast, pumpkin spice is a perfect addition.

Now, you can easily buy pumpkin spice at your local grocery store and call it a day. But, the better option is to make it at home.  It is a more affordable route; you can adjust it to your liking, and you will be able to mix it up whenever you need it. Best of all, it is so simple.

How to Make Pumpkin Spice at Home

You will need just five ingredients for pumpkin spice and it doesn’t include pumpkin. The ingredients are ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, ground cloves, and ground allspice.

You can play with the ratios, but the overall formula is to go heavy on the cinnamon and lighter on other ingredients. For the traditional version of pumpkin spice, combine one teaspoon of ground cinnamon with ½ teaspoon of ground ginger, ½ teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon of ground cloves, and 1/8 teaspoon of ground allspice. Mix it all together, and you are done.

How to Store Pumpkin Spice

Once you have made your pumpkin spice, transfer it to a glass jar with a tight lid. Leave it in a dark and cold place, and you can count on it to remain good for a couple of years.

While we’re sad to see summer come to an end, do you know what that means? Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) season is coming! PSL season came a bit early this year—Starbucks made the drink available on August 24. The drink has been around since 2003, but the history of pumpkin spice has been around much longer.

Pumpkin spice is a blend of spices that were once used to add flavor to pumpkin pie. The spices used vary, but typically it consists of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves.

Recipes for pumpkin pie date back to 1978. Amelia Simmons had two recipes for spice-filled “pompkin” pie in the reprint of her cookbook American Cookery. One of them had nutmeg and ginger and the other had allspice and ginger. Pumpkin spice was officially introduced in the 1930s by Thompson & Taylor Spice Co and McCormick & Company who came out with Pumpkin Pie Spice.

The PSL was invented by a Starbucks employee named Peter Dukes who was the director of espresso and whose team was responsible for creating the seasonal drinks. Starbucks first used cinnamon and nutmeg in the drink and in 2015, they began using real pumpkins. The drink has become the most popular seasonal drink!

Now it’s not just pumpkin pies and lattes that have gotten the pumpkin spice treatment—there are tons of pumpkin spice products. There’s everything from pumpkin spice Pop Tarts and donuts to pumpkin spice pasta and hummus.

What do you think of pumpkin spice? Are you a fan?
