Portugal’s Vinho Verde is the local “green wine” made of grapes that grow in the cooler part of the country. The grapes are harvested before they ripen, which gives the wine an acidic and floral finish with just a little bit of sweetness.
Madeira is probably the most famous wine from Portugal. It’s made in the tropical climate and comes in a range from dry to sweet. You probably know about popular Madieria wines like HM Borges, Henriques & Henriques, and J. Faria & Flihos.

If you go to Lisbon, the best place to get pastel de nata is the famous bakery Pasteis de Belém. The bakery is a bit outside the city limits but is well worth the trip.
If you plan a trip to Portugal over the holidays, ask around and you will be sure to find a special holiday treat called sonhos. Sonhos translates to dreams in English, and are called such because they are a donut-like pastry made from a dough similar to choux pastry. You won’t find them anytime after Christmas, so make sure to look out for them and stock up when you are in Portugal.
