If you’ve just gotten home from a long day at the office, then you probably don’t feel like slaving away in the kitchen. Fortunately, you don’t have to. Here are some quick and easy recipes that you can prepare using just your microwave.

Mac & Cheese

Place your macaroni in a large bowl and grate some cheese over it. Then, pour a generous amount of cooking liquid into the mix. Place some cling wrap over the bowl and poke holes in it before placing it in the microwave. Continue to microwave the bowl until the pasta is cooked.

Cauliflower Cheese

Cut one large cauliflower into bite-sized pieces. Place the pieces in a microwave-friendly bowl and add 150 grams of cheddar cheese. Drizzle it with some hot English mustard, whole milk, and thyme leaves before microwaving for eight minutes.

Scrambled Eggs

Crack two eggs and use a fork to mix them. Add two tablespoons of milk before sprinkling some salt over the mixture. Warm the eggs in the microwave for 30 seconds before removing them, beating them again, and warming them further. Once ready, put them on some toast.

Microwave ovens are a marvel of kitchen technology, but even though they’ve been around for so long most of us probably take them for granted. In a pinch, heating up food in a flash in these electrical appliances is so convenient and makes life much easier.

However, there are some important safety tips that are easy to forget when using these appliances. Here are a few that you should always keep in mind to stay safe and healthy.

Never Microwave Metal or Plastic

Microwaves are not meant to have any sort of metal or plastic inside of them. Metals can spark and cause a fire, while plastic can be melted by microwave energy—releasing toxic fumes and particles into the food you are warming up.

Cover with a Paper Towel

If you overheat food in a microwave oven, it can result in an explosion and possibly a fire that could be devastating to your home and kitchen. It sounds hard to believe, but just covering up your food with a paper towel when heating it can stop it from “spitting” and potentially causing a fire.

Protect Your Hands

The same rules that apply to taking food out of a conventional oven also apply to microwaves. Protect your hands with oven mitts or gloves when removing a hot plate or container from a microwave oven to ensure you don’t burn your hands!

Scrambled Eggs

Delicious scrambled eggs can be prepared in just minutes using the microwave. Beat two or three eggs in a microwavable bowl, season, and then microwave for 45 seconds. Check how the eggs are doing, and then cook them at 30-second intervals until you are happy with the consistency. Remember to take them out before they look completely ready, as they will continue to cook.

Baked Potato

Fluffy baked potatoes can be made in the microwave in just 15 minutes. Pierce the skin all the way around and pop in the microwave on full power for 15-17 minutes, turning in the middle. If you want crispier skin, you can also oven bake for 10 minutes until the skin is crispy.

Rice

Rice is one of the most versatile base foods and can be prepared in the microwave in just 15 minutes. All you have to do is pour the rice into a microwaveable bowl, fill the bowl with water until the rice is submerged by one inch, and add a pinch of salt for flavor. If you are a health addict, you already know that microwave popcorn is not the best thing to snack on. Numerous researches have shown that unfortunately, these bags of popcorn can contain cancerogenic ingredients. Plus, it is much cheaper to get bags with kernels and pop them yourself. But have you ever thought about the fact that you can actually do that in the microwave as well? If not, we’re here to tell you all about it.

Instructions:

First of all, you’ll need a large microwave bowl and a plate that can cover the bowl. Another great thing about this way of making popcorn is that you don’t have to use any oil. Feel free to add any spices, salt or even butter.

Put 1/4 of the kernels in the microwave-safe bowl and cover it with the plate. You can use almost any plate as long as it covers the bowl. Don’t worry if there is a gap in between, that will only be more helpful. The kernels are ready for the microwave. The cooking time will depend on several factors, including the specifications of your microwave. One of the safest ways to go is set the timer for five minutes, and add more if needed.
