As far as natural sweeteners go, nothing really beats honey. You can use it to replace highly-processed sugar in many foods and drinks, including tea. It’s very common to use honey as a tea sweetener due to its many healthy properties, but here are three things you should keep in mind before doing it.

No Toxic Properties

If you’re thinking of not adding honey to your tea because you’ve heard somewhere it can become toxic when heated, you’ll be happy to hear this is just a common misconception. You can freely add honey to warm water, but it’s best to make sure it’s not boiling hot.

Boiling Hot Water

Adding honey to boiling hot water won’t do you any harm, but it won’t do you any good either. The main reason why you’re using honey in the first place is the many health benefits it contains, but it will be stripped of them if its enzymes change when it’s added to boiling hot water.

Use Honey in Moderation

Despite being healthier than sugar, honey contains more calories and you shouldn’t go overboard when adding it to your foods and drinks, including tea. Use it in moderation and try to stick to one teaspoon per cup of tea.

Honey is often considered a natural superfood, but it’s still mostly made of sugar. Even still, it can have amazing health benefits when consumed moderately. Here’s a bit more about the health benefits of honey.

One tablespoon of honey (21 grams) comes with 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar. It is made of half glucose and half fructose. Honey doesn’t contain fat or protein. Its biggest strength is vitamins and minerals. The list includes B vitamins, calcium, copper, iron, zinc, etc. They are mostly derived from the soil and nectar-producing plants. The quality of honey comes from its source. Darker honey is generally more beneficial than pale honey.

When it comes to health benefits, honey has several. It’s great for soothing a cough. Honey also has a positive impact on treating irritable bowel syndrome, especially when taken on an empty stomach. It’s also known for promoting reproductive health and reducing PMS and menopausal symptoms. Although it can be an allergen, for most people it’s completely safe. With over 300 varieties to choose from, you’ll easily find a favorite to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Honey comes with a long list of benefits, and it’s a great alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners—as long as you use it in moderation. Despite its huge popularity, there are many myths about honey out there, but is there any truth to them?

Crystallized = Spoiled

You shouldn’t throw your honey away once it crystallizes. Crystallization is honey’s way of preserving itself, and it doesn’t have a negative impact on its nutritional or quality values. Your honey can change over time, but it won’t go bad if it’s properly stored in a sealed container.

Metal Spoons

Another myth suggests you shouldn’t use metal spoons to scoop honey, due to its organic acid content. Honey, however, won’t lead to corrosion—unless you leave your spoon inside for a prolonged period of time.

Hot Water Mix

You can add honey to hot water or tea, but keep in mind it will end up reducing its flavor and aroma and potently destroy some of its natural qualities. Wait until your water cools down a little bit before adding honey to the mix.

So what is hot honey? It’s a combination of honey and chile spice and the spice level and type of chile peppers used varies based on the brand.

Mike’s Hot Honey is the most popular brand and due to its popularity, hot honey can now be found in supermarkets next to traditional honeys or it can be bought online. Another option is to make your own by stirring a half of a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes into two tablespoons of honey.

Hot honey can be used in sweet or savory dishes. It adds an amazing finishing touch to pizza, pasta, roasted veggies, and chicken. If you’re looking to add it to something sweet, put a bit in your cookie recipe or try some in your coffee or tea. Pretty much any dish that works with honey will taste great with hot honey.

Green tea is one of my favorite hot beverages. The delicate, slightly bitter, and slightly herbal flavor of this tea can be enjoyed on its own, but many people prefer to add another flavor to make it taste a little better.

If you want to upgrade the taste of your next cup of green tea, why not give these ingredients a try?

Adding dried mango to a cup of green tea rehydrates the fruit, allowing its juices to escape into the drink and imbuing it with a delicious, sweet, and tropical flavor. This is a great addition to give the tea a bit of sweetness to counteract its natural bitterness.

Ginger

Another great option for green tea is ginger, which gives the drink a bit of spicy bite that many love. In addition, ginger is a super healthy root that has the ability to reduce inflammation and calm an upset stomach.

Have you ever thought about how the way you store ingredients affects their lifespan? Well, let me tell you, you’ve actually been storing some foods incorrectly. Keep reading to find out which foods belong out of the fridge.

Tomatoes

You’ve probably been keeping tomatoes wrong your whole life. These delicious fruits will lose all their flavor if you put them in the fridge. There is no bigger crime than taking away the taste from something you bought. That’s why you should find a dark and colder place in your home to store tomatoes there.

Potatoes

Another food that you should avoid storing in the fridge. Cold temperatures have the ability to break down the starches in potatoes. This makes them unpleasant and overly-sweet and gritty. Instead, find a dark spot where you will keep them from now on.

Basil

Your favorite leafy green should stay away from the cold as well. The best way to store it is to put it in a glass of water. For long-term storage, you can blanch the leaves and then freeze the basil.

Honey

You can use a jar of honey for as long as you want, the only thing you have to avoid is keeping it in the fridge. Honey will crystalize because of the cold temperatures, so anything other than that works just fine.

When the time is up, you can start cooking the shrimp in a skillet. Make sure you remove the marinade first. Use medium-high heat and cook them for around 45 seconds per side. You can now add a little bit of the leftover marinade and continue cooking them for an extra minute. While you’re doing that you can also cook some broccoli, rice and carrots in another skillet.

Honey cake is the perfect cake to make when you want something sweet but you don’t want to go through all the difficult steps in making a cake. With roots in Eastern European Jewish cuisine as well as traditional Russian, this cake has been around for many years, but continues to be a delicious baked good time after time. If you need a go-to recipe that is impressive, moist, and something more than unique, make this honey cake!

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and grease and flour a cake pan.
  2.  In a bowl, sift together 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 3 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, salt, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg.
  3. Wash and zest an orange until you have 2 tablespoons worth of zest. Using an organic orange for this is recommended.
  4. In a separate and larger bowl, mix together 4 eggs, 1 cup of honey, 1/2 oil, 1 cup of sugar, and the orange zest.
  5. With an electric hand mixer or a sturdy whisk, alternately add in the dry flour mixture and 1 cup of orange juice to the wet ingredients. Continue until all the dry ingredients are gone.
  6. Bake for 40-50 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
