Chorizo is, without a doubt, one of the stars of Spanish cuisine. This bright red sausage is beloved when grilled, placed on top of huevos rotos, or blended into a special Spanish omelette. The flavor quotient of chorizo is off the charts, making it much more flavorful than many other sausages found around the world. But what gives it its amazing taste?

Paprika

The spice that gives chorizo its characteristic color and flavor is paprika. Made from crushed red peppers and smoked, you’ll find paprika in both sweet and spicy variants. Both are used in chorizo, creating some which are spicy and others which are sweeter. As such, it’s quite smoky and delicious.

Garlic

Spanish chorizo also always contains a bit of garlic, which isn’t as noticeable as the paprika but strengthens the sausage’s flavor backbone. Pungent, spicy, and a little bit sweet when cooked in the chorizo, this classic spice couldn’t miss the party.

Salt

It might go without saying, but salt is another key component of chorizo’s one-of-a-kind flavor. Used in generous quantities in this Spanish classic, the salt really brings out the flavor of the pork which is used to make the finished product.

The Spanish dish of paella is one of the best-known and most popular dishes originating from this Mediterranean country. While traditionally made with chicken, rabbit, green beans, and rice, there are now a ton of seafood, veggie, and other varieties which can be found around the world.

The preparation of paella in a thin layer on a paella skillet helps for an even and moist final product that combines all of its ingredients’ flavors. In addition to this, it also allows for the best part of the paella to form: socarrat.

So, just what is socarrat?

Socarrat is the crispy bottom layer that can be found between the rice and the paella skillet upon making the dish. This is lots of Spaniards’ favorite part of paella, as the crispy and flavorful, borderline “burnt” layer that can be found here is packed with the essence of the dish.

The juices from the meats and vegetables used to make the dish, along with a good bit of seasonings like saffron and garlic, combine with olive oil and the edges of the rice grains to make a succulent treat.

The next time you find yourself enjoying a paella, be sure to take note of the delicious socarrat that makes a paella special!

Have you ever heard of aquafaba before? This vegan cooking substitute has become one of the revolutions of the culinary world ever since its discovery just over five years ago, and it’s an excellent substitute for egg.

The name aquafaba comes from Latin, with “aqua” meaning water and “faba” meaning bean. This liquid is obtained from the water in which beans have been cooked, which results in a viscous liquid that is an excellent substitute for eggs.

While you can make this liquid yourself by boiling any sort of dry bean (especially chickpeas, which are said to yield the best-tasting aquafaba), in reality, it can be obtained simply by draining a can of beans and then using the resulting liquid.

If you only need an egg substitute without whipping or any other special preparation, it’s as easy as using three tablespoons of aquafaba for each egg called for in a recipe. Your cakes, pastries, and whatever else you might end up making will turn out unbelievably authentic-tasting!

Now, when it comes to recipes calling for whipped egg whites like meringues and macarons, aquafaba can also do the trick. Just whip slowly for around five to ten minutes, and you’ll be amazed at how this bean water ends up resembling whipped egg whites!

If you’re looking to find the perfect egg substitute, aquafaba is the best choice out there. Why not give it a try?

Shandies and radlers are two of the most popular light alcoholic beverages which are consumed and beloved by many during the warm summer months of the year.

While both of these drinks are quite similar and made with a base of beer and fruit beverages, there are some important differences that differentiate these two summer classics. What are they, then? Let’s find out!

Radler

A radler is a drink that originated in Germany in the early 20th century when cyclists were looking for a refreshing and hydrating brew to drink after long bike rides. A 50/50 mix of beer and lemon soda was created, but has since evolved into a drink that can be made with all kinds of fruit drinks. One of the most popular radlers on Earth is Austria’s Stiegl Radler, which is made with grapefruit juice.

Shandy

Shandies, originating in England, are a common fruit and beer mixture which is always made with a type of lemonade. These lemonades can either be carbonated or non-carbonated, but the result is always a mixture of beer and a lemon drink. The proportion of beer to lemonade sometimes varies, with beer occasionally being as low as 30% in the mixture.

Have you ever tried a raisin before? These little purple fruits are a favorite as a snack and in delicious desserts and pastries throughout the world, but many people do not know the process that is undergone in order to produce them.

The process for making grapes begins in a vineyard. Here, grapes are grown (preferably seedless) in places where they mature early in the season. This allows them to then be treated in order to make raisins.

On a worldwide scale, the most commonly-used grapes to make raisins are the Sultana and Thompson Seedless varieties, both originating from the same type of grape that comes from Turkey.

After the grapes have been picked, they must be dried in order to make raisins. There are two main options for drying, the first of which is the traditional and most common method. Grapes are spread out on pallets in a sunny place that is protected from pests and bad weather and are allowed to dry until their water content has essentially disappeared.

In modern times, some grapes are also dehydrated using machinery and other non-natural processes. Both processes crystallize and concentrate grapes’ sugar content, making them over 60% sugar by weight.

These sun-dried beauties are then ready for consumption. They can be enjoyed in all kinds of ways, from in cereals to as an on-the-go snack! Aren’t you glad you learned more about raisins?

More and more coffee lovers have started to experiment with moka pots these days. This classic coffee-making device, which has been popular in countries such as Italy, Spain, and Portugal for decades, is now having its value recognized by people all over the globe.

If you are looking to start making coffee using this classic method, here are some keys for making the best-tasting moka pot coffee possible.

Start off With Warm Water

One key to making good moka pot coffee is to put warm water into the water reservoir when brewing the coffee. Cold water will take too long to heat up, allowing for the possibility of the coffee grounds to burn and taste bad.

Don’t Heat at Maximum Temperature

Instead of turning your stove onto its highest possible temperature to make your moka pot coffee, and do it fast, try medium-high heat. Once again, this is key in avoiding the possibility of the coffee grounds burning and the water spraying out of the moka pot uncontrollably.

Avoid Letting the Coffee Boil

Make sure to keep an eye on your moka pot after the coffee is finished brewing. If you allow it to sit for too long in the device’s upper chamber, it may begin to boil, rendering it extremely unpalatable.
