Since we were kids, so many of us grew up hearing the definitive phrase that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But is this idea really true? How did this concept come into being, and does it vary based on specific scenarios? Here’s what you need to know about breakfast, and whether or not it’s the most important meal of the day.

First, we’ll defend this claim by maintaining the idea that nutritionists place heavy importance on the first thing you eat every day. Indeed, they believe that the makeup of what you eat first sets the tone for your body for the rest of the day.

However, this only tells part of the story. The truth is that the aforementioned phrase—”breakfast is the most important meal of the day”—wasn’t necessarily coined by nutritionists. Cereal companies definitely played a part in pushing the idea to sell their produces in the mid-20th century, which added to our perception of the idea.

Finally, when you add it all up, it’s safe to say that you should take breakfast seriously—but to an extent. It’s not the end all be all. In fact, many people have taken to intermittent fasting, which negates breakfasts completely. Not everyone eats breakfast every day, and therefore it’s hardly something that should be seen as a requirement.
