At a cookout or restaurant, for lunch or dinner, a good burger is incredibly satisfying. While a classic burger with just some lettuce and tomato is great, amping up your burger with extra toppings will make it even more satisfying. Luckily there are lots of toppings you can easily make yourself at home. Here are a few fun ideas.

Caramelized Onions

Caramelized onions are one of the most well-known and delicious toppings for burgers or any meat. It takes time for the onions to cook slowly, drawing out their natural sweetness and letting their sugars caramelize properly for a biting, sweet-and-savory burger experience.

Roasted Tomatoes

If you love tomatoes and you like your veggies to have some extra oomph, you can roast your tomato slices before putting them on the burger. Drizzle them with olive oil, a bit of honey, and herbs. You can do this for any other vegetable you like on your burger, as well.

Pickled Onions

Another way to prepare your onions is to pickle them quickly. This is great if you like your burger to have a bite and some sourness rather than sweetness. This will also give you a nice extra crunch.

Glaze is a great way to top lots of desserts, from donuts to loaf cakes to soft pretzels. It’s much easier to whip up than icing and can be poured or drizzled to satisfying perfection. That means it’s also much easier to work with than icing. If you’d like a nice sugary top on your desserts or if you’re baking something that can take either glaze or icing and don’t have an electric mixer, use this simple guide for making glaze.

Ingredients:

  • Powdered sugar
  • liquid (such as water or milk)
  • Flavoring of your choice

Instructions:

Start by sifting two cups of powdered sugar (or as much as you want to use) into a mixing bowl. Sifting it will help avoid clumping and make it easier to mix up.

Drizzle your liquid in slowly as you whisk, or add in tablespoons and whisk after each addition. As soon as you get a pourable consistency, stop adding liquid. Glaze that’s too thin won’t stick to your pastry, so be sure to keep a close eye on how thick it is and don’t add too much liquid. Finally, add your flavoring and you’re ready to pour! Be sure your cake or cookies are completely cooled before pouring on the glaze, or it will melt.

Flavors

There are lots of options for flavor, the most common being vanilla extract or lemon juice for a lemon glaze. But there are lots of other options you can try out, such as coffee, liqueur, or other fruit juice.

A classic Israeli salad makes a refreshing, crunchy snack or side with any meal. What makes it so great is that it has very few ingredients, is beautifully multicolored, and is super healthy. Even though it’s not too hard to make, there is some technique that goes into making a really good Israeli salad. So, here’s how to make a really delicious Israeli salad.

Basics

For your basic ingredients, you’ll need to chop up cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onion. You’ll want about two cucumbers to each tomato, and no more than a quarter of a medium-sized red onion. Combine them in a bowl and dress with a splash of lemon juice, a splash of olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Technique

The key to a really good salad is to cut it as fine as possible. Cut up your cucumbers into thin strips, and then into small squares. Dice your tomatoes and onions as small as possible, too. This maximizes the crunch and gives you lots more space for the dressing to coat the salad.

To Serve

If you’re making the salad to serve for later, hold off on dressing it until then. If you let the salad sit in the dressing for too long, the salt and lemon juice will bring all the juice out of the vegetables, reducing some of the crunchiness and making the whole dish a bit wet.

Even if all you’ve got in your house is the most basic ingredients, that doesn’t mean you can’t whip up a great meal. For example, this stir fry uses ingredients that you probably have lying around if you ever make Asian-inspired food. This recipe is pretty easy and doesn’t take very long. Here’s how to make it.

You’ll Need:

  • Whatever stir fry veggies you like, they can also be frozen (peas and carrots, bok choi, broccoli, etc.)
  • A protein
  • Garlic and ginger
  • Chicken stock
  • Soy sauce (preferably reduced-sodium, to give you more control of how salty the dish will be)
  • Sesame Oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Start by heating some oil in a pan and grating in your fresh garlic and ginger. Let them toast until fragrant, about a minute. If you’re using onions or mushrooms, fry these up at the same time. This is also the time to add and fry up your protein. (Unless it is egg, then add it at the end or cook in a separate pan.)

Next, pour in chicken stock to about half an inch above the bottom of the pan. If you need to steam any of your veggies, throw them in now and cover, let simmer until the veggies are steamed. If not, throw in all your veggies (for example if using frozen), and bring the stock to a boil. Let the stock cook and mix until it’s a bit thicker and coats the vegetables.

Now, pour in your soy and mix, tasting as you go. Be careful, if you’re using powdered stock and full-sodium soy sauce you can easily end up with a VERY salty dish.

Finally, add sesame oil and any other flavors you like, then add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds, serve over rice.

If you’re about to host some guests for a game or a movie night and you’re looking for an easy “junk food” to grace the table as a complement to your chips and veggie sticks, look no further than this easy two-ingredient onion dip. It does use some shortcuts, but it takes less than ten minutes to make and tastes delicious with a little crunch too. Here’s how to make it.

You’ll Need:

  • One tub of sour cream
  • French onion soup stock powder: About 3 tablespoons per 100 grams of sour cream, so 15 tablespoons for a standard 16oz (500 gram) container
  • Garnishes, if you wish

First, dump your sour cream into a large mixing bowl. Then, measure in your onion soup powder. Mix until well-combined.

Let sit for five minutes to give the onion flavor a chance to permeate, then mix again and taste. If it doesn’t taste as strong as you’d like, add another scoop of powder and mix. Repeat until it reaches your desired flavor. Garnish with green onion or parsley, if you like.

This dip is delicious because it has a bit of crunch from the dried onion bits in the soup mix. It’s perfect for dipping whatever you want, but goes especially well with potato chips (think sour cream and onion flavor, but straight from the source), or cut-up veggies like carrots, cucumber, bell pepper, and celery.

Maple is a delicious flavor that makes an appearance in the classic fall flavors lineup—and of course, breakfast foods. But did you know that it works especially well with bringing out smoky and roasted flavors in dishes, too? Here are some great meal ideas that utilize maple syrup.

Maple Roasted Vegetables

Using maple is a great way to bring out the flavors of orange veggies like squash, sweet potato, carrot, and pumpkin. Adding in maple with a bit of garlic powder, ginger spice, black pepper, and some smoked paprika is a great combo for a dish that is lightly sweet and with a little zesty bite, as well.

Smoked/Roasted Meat Substitutes

If you’re vegan or vegetarian, you might feel like you’re lacking the smokey flavor you can only get with meat. However, maple can bring out smokey flavors and balance out the savory and sweet flavors. Brush it on with other marinade ingredients before grilling your seitan or veggie burger.

Baked Beans

Beans are a great meal because they are healthy and have a lot of nutrients, too. Thankfully, maple syrup is known to be one of the best sweeteners for baked beans, since its darker flavor truly complements the dish.

There’s a piece of conventional wisdom that says you should try to get as many colors as possible into your diet. Theoretically, it’s a sign that you’re getting a solid variety of nutrients and food groups each day. (Of course, it doesn’t work perfectly since you could simply eat a bowl of fruit loops and call it a day.) One color that’s a little harder to find in nature is pink. So if you love to get color in your diet, here are some pink foods to try.

Beets

Beets are a great source of fiber and vitamins since they are a vegetable, but they are also sweet and earthy which makes them very versatile. They’re great in soups, salads, roasted veggie medleys, and more. You can also use their juice to add color to lots of other dishes.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb is something of an underrated fruit, but it’s especially good in pastries, crumbles, and cobblers. It’s got a very unique flavor which isn’t for everyone, so it also does well cooked and mixed in with other fruits to add its special something without being overwhelming.

Berries

Berries such as raspberries and strawberries will turn a smoothie or a sauce pink when blended with lighter ingredients. Adding blueberries or blackberries will give you an even lovelier deep pink or purple as well.
