If you’re a meat lover looking for a juicy new dish to truly sink your teeth into, then there’s perhaps nothing better than a scrumptious, meaty hot dog drenched in a delectable sauce. Here’s your guide to making sausage and pepper hoagies with harissa mayo that will be sure to become your new favorite meal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound sweet mini peppers
  • 1 sweet onion
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon harissa paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sliced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 4 4-ounce Italian sausages

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line the sausages on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes.
  2. While you wait for the sausages to cook, heat two tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook onion for about 4 minutes until it browns. Increase the heat to medium-high and add peppers. Stir the garlic, oregano, and salt into the mix and cook for another minute.
  3. Put the pepper mixture in a medium bowl. Once ready, cut the sausages in half and place them in the skillet. Add the remaining oil and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, until browned.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, harissa, and vinegar. Cut the hoagie rolls open lengthways and lather with the harissa mayo sauce. Add the sausages, stuff with the sausages and pepper mixture, and top up with more sauce before tucking in.

Despite its enormous popularity, mayonnaise is wildly considered as one of the unhealthiest condiments on the market because it’s high in fat and calories. If you’re looking for healthier alternatives you could replace it with, these five are your best bet.

Hummus

Mayo is commonly used as a spread in sandwiches and wraps, and it can easily be replaced with other, more nutritious substitutes, such as hummus.

Plain Greek Yogurt

If you can’t imagine a salad that doesn’t include any mayo, how about giving low-fat plain Greek yogurt a go? It will bring out the best in other ingredients, giving your salads an amazing taste.

Mashed Avocado

If you’re looking for a healthier spread that you can use instead of mayo, consider mashed avocado because it’s packed with healthy fats.

Pesto

Made with basil, olive oil, and pine nuts, this traditional Italian sauce can replace mayo in both sandwiches and salads, and it’s incredibly healthy and versatile.

Vegan Mayonnaise

Vegan mayo is experiencing a rise in popularity as more and more people try to embrace a healthier diet. Many store-bought brands are already available, but you can always make your own.
