Do you typically shop at supermarkets or food markets? While supermarkets are easier to find and have everything you’ll probably need under one roof, there are so many great advantages to going to your local food market and buying the majority of what you need there. Here are some reasons why shopping at your local food market is such a great decision.

Everything is Fresher

When you shop at a local food market instead of a chain supermarket, the chances you will be buying fresher products is so much higher. Instead of coming from national distribution centers, everything you’ll find at a local market will have been picked or made nearby and recently.

Supporting Your Local Economy

Another great advantage to shopping in a food market is you will be directly supporting your local economy by buying products from your neighbors and fellow residents of your region. This helps the growth of your local micro-economy and contributes to your fellow citizens’ wallets.

Consume Local Products

In addition to helping your local economy, you will also be consuming more local products if you buy at a food market. It’s better and more environmentally-friendly to get a handful of tomatoes that have been grown 5 miles from your home than it is to get a handful of them from another country.

Everyone is talking about the new trend—clean eating. But what does that even mean?

Eating clean means eating consciously and thoughtfully. First of all, we need to understand where the food on our plate came from. This is the first step.

After checking where our food comes from, it is suggested to choose food products that have gone through as little intervention as possible along the way. Leave behind processed, industrial, and packaged food.

Eating clean also means keeping a clean environment. Therefore, it is highly recommended to choose local food that did not come from the other side of the world. This also contributes to the consumption of fresh food but also reduces the carbon footprint and helps support local farms.

The downside of this is we will not always have apples or bananas, but on the other hand we can explore food and raw products we would not otherwise consume and diversify our shopping list.

The last step, and perhaps the most difficult, is to remove harmful foods from our diet. That is, avoiding processed sugar, saturated fat, and processed grains.

The beginning may be difficult, but the local and health effects of clean eating are worth it.

You went on vacation and are planning to cook a home-cooked meal in the apartment you rented. How fun!

The journey to the perfect meal begins with grocery shopping. It is advisable to choose a supermarket that offers fresh and local merchandise—or visit the local farmers market. Purchase local produce like cheeses, pastries and bread, and vegetables.

Do online research and see what kind of raw materials characterize the area. If you are in Madrid, you will probably want to buy fresh octopus. If you are in France, you will surely buy a baguette and excellent cheese. If you are in Germany, you can enjoy a selection of fresh potatoes and asparagus in the spring season.

Ask your local friends where they recommend to go for food shopping, and whether certain raw materials are especially recommended this season. For example, some countries offer charming and fresh pumpkins in the fall season.

If you are sensitive to a particular food or have allergies and the components of the product are unfamiliar to you, do not take any risks.

Try to buy organic and unprocessed products, and of course—take lots of photos for Instagram!

If you’ve ever heard the term food co-op and not known what is was, you’re not alone. A food co-op, or food cooperative is a grocery store alternative that essentially is a membership to a store as well as often being involved in deciding what products the store carries. This non-traditional grocery store has a lot of benefits that you may want to consider taking part in.

Support Local

Food co-ops almost often source their produce and sometimes other goods as well from local farms and business, which feeds right back into the community. This is a great way to support your local economy!

Seasonsal

Since the produce is usually sourced locally, you can feel good about eating only seasonal food, which is better for the environment in terms of agriculture and fossil fuel waste.

Zero-Waste

If you follow a zero-waste lifestyle or try to reduce your waste, joining a food co-op is a great place to start. A lot of times their products will be in bulk and the produce won’t be wrapped up in plastic, which reduces a lot of waste! Also, a lot of food co-ops will price the produce that is starting to go bad very cheaply or even for free! As long as the food isn’t molding, you can get a deal and save something from being thrown away!
