Irish coffee is one of those rare drinks that can wake you up and make you tipsy at the same time. This simple cocktail, which combines coffee, whiskey, sugar, and cream, offers a sweet and smooth taste while warming you up in more ways than one. When Irish coffee is prepared right, it can be really good. But when prepared poorly, it makes you feel like you never want to taste it again.  In order to avoid the latter scenario, avoid these mistakes almost everyone makes when preparing Irish coffee.

Not Using the Proper Glassware

The glassware you use for Irish coffee is more important than you think. If you don’t have a standard Irish coffee glass, use any six-ounce glass that is made out of thick glass. This way, the glass will be able to retain heat better while also resulting in a pleasing visual experience. Also, make sure to preheat the glass by pouring hot water into it before preparing the cocktail so it doesn’t lose heat.

Not Using Quality Whiskey

Using quality ingredients is a shortcut to making any cocktail taste great and Irish coffee is no different. If you opt for cheap whiskey, it will be overpowered by coffee and you won’t even taste it. Make sure to splurge on quality whiskey, although don’t overspend, as finer differences in taste won’t be noticeable due to other ingredients.

Thinking Any Coffee Will Do

The coffee part of Irish coffee also requires careful consideration. While the quality isn’t as important, the variety of coffee and how you make it is. Irish coffee works best with medium-roast coffee that has been brewed.

Opting for White Sugar

White sugar in Irish coffee will definitely do, but if you opt for brown sugar, you’ll be in for a treat. Brown sugar has a richer flavor and works better in bringing out the natural sweetness of whiskey.

Regular coffee doesn’t do the job of shaking you up in the morning? Then why not try giving it a little boost with a shot of whiskey and making it Irish?

Irish coffee is a popular beverage that combines two things that you would think shouldn’t be combined; coffee and whiskey. However, it turns out they go great hand in hand, mixing to create a perfect beverage for all occasions. If you don’t believe us, make it yourself using the recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of hot coffee (freshly brewed)
  • 1 shot of whiskey (1.5 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Whipped cream

Instructions:

  1. Make a cup of your preferred coffee. The best choice here is filter coffee as it won’t overpower whiskey.
  2. Pour some hot water into your coffee mug to warm it up. Discard the water and pour in the coffee until the mug is ¼ away from being full.
  3. Sweeten a tablespoon of brown sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
  4. Add a shot of whiskey. You can use any you want, but our recommendation is to stay true to the recipe and opt for an Irish brand like Jameson.
  5. Give it a good stir and top it with whipped cream.
  6. Take a sip and marvel at how good the drink is.
