When baking desserts, we often come across recipes that require cake flour. It can be tempting to assume that cake flour is not that important and that it can just be replaced by all-purpose flour, but that’s not exactly right. While all-purpose flour is great for some baked goods, it’s less than perfect for cakes and similar desserts, and if a recipe requires cake flour you should absolutely use cake flour.

What’s the Big Difference?

Cake flour is made from low-protein wheat and contains less protein than regular flour. It’s a great choice for tender cakes and can help elevate them to another level. Cake flour tolerates adding more water and more sugar, which will make your cakes look and taste wonderful.

Finely ground cake flour can be bought in stores, but if you can’t get it for some reason and you need it for the recipe, you can make a replacement with all-purpose flour and cornstarch. There are many recipes for this if you want to try it, and we found one here.

The replacement is not as good as the real thing, but it will get the job done. It’s better to make it than to simply use all-purpose flour because you’ll be disappointed with the result.

During these weird times when we’re encouraged to stay home more, many of us resort to cooking and baking more than usual. If you’ve always wanted to start making your own bread, now’s a perfect time. Here are all the tools you’re going to need if you want to make sourdough bread at home.

Starter

There’s no sourdough bread without a sourdough starter. You can make your own but it will take days to develop. If you want it right now, buy it at any store.

Plastic Container

You will keep your starter alive by feeding it flour and water, and the best way to store it is a transparent plastic container. You can see what’s happening inside and, unlike glass, it won’t break easily if you drop it.

Scale

Baking is all about precise measuring, so make sure you have a scale on hand.

Flour

You will, of course, need flour. All-purpose flour is a great option for sourdough bread, but you can also get a big bag of bread flour that will enable you to make bakery-like loaves.

Dutch Oven

A Dutch oven is one of the best dishes you can use for baking bread. Covering it with the lid will keep the steam inside and make your bread rise, giving it the perfect texture and flavor.

When you first decide to go keto it may seem impossible, but thanks to many people willing to share their ideas and recipes online it’s never been easier to follow this lifestyle if that’s what you want. One thing most people miss when they start eating according to the keto principles are baked goods, and if you pick these low-carb flour alternatives you won’t miss them at all!

Almond Flour

Almond flour is perfect for making all kinds of baked goods, gravy, or pretty much anything that requires all-purpose flour. It’s made from blanched almonds and it’s high in healthy fats, magnesium, and Vitamin E.

Chickpea Flour

Chickpea flour definitely contains carbohydrates, but it’s still well-balanced and has plenty of nutrients and fiber. It’s best used in savory recipes.
