Can you believe that the fall season is already here? For gastronomy, there’s nothing that’s quite as strongly associated with the season as the use of pumpkins in both food and drink. Whether you like it or not, the fall season is all about this special gourd!

Beer lovers will find all sorts of pumpkin-flavored brews during the fall, and here are three pumpkin beer styles that you should seek out.

Pumpkin Stout

Stouts naturally go well with pumpkin due to their maltiness and smoky, rich flavor. A number of craft breweries have introduced pumpkin stouts on the market, which go together perfectly with a cool autumn night.

Pumpkin Ale

Pumpkin ales are probably the most en vogue beer containing this autumn fruit, with a wide variety of creations being offered on the market. From coffee pumpkin ales to spiced pumpkin ales, these medium-bodied beers let pumpkin come to the forefront and shine.

Pumpkin Saison

Harder to find but oh so delicious are pumpkin saisons—a modern twist on this classic Belgian beer, which uses natural yeasts and bacteria to create a funky flavor. Mildly sour and occasionally described as “spicy,” pumpkin takes on a whole new flavor when put into a saison.

The fall season is fast approaching, with the second to last season of the year coming up on September 22nd. Beer lovers are starting the transition from light, fruity, and hoppy summer beers to some of the autumn favorites that are enjoyed around the world. Whether you’re a beer lover or a newbie in the world of suds, get prepared with this selection of fall beer styles that you need to add to your shopping list.

Marzen

Germany’s Oktoberfest is the biggest beer celebration in the world, and this fall classic revolves around one thing: Marzen beer. This German favorite is now made around the world and stands out for its clean, smooth, malty character which is perfect for cool weather sipping.

One of my all time favourites. @schlenkerla1405 blew me away when I was younger, the first that shattered my preconceptions of what beer could and should be. Layers upon layers of flavour, a shopping list full of unique and interesting flavours yet with such an easy, casual drinkability. It pours an aesthetically pleasing ruby/mahogany hue with a tan coloured head. The smoked bacon/sausage aspect of the beer can sometimes be overplayed and pigeonhole this beer, but it's far from a one trick piggy. Yes, there's a butchery's worth of smoky bacon on the nose and in the initial taste but it settles down and begins to be matched by other flavours. Caramel, tobacco, the tingle of herbs from the German noble hops, honey on burnt toast, charred wood. The beer has a lovely medium body, not too heavy considering the rich abundance of flavour at play. Just a wonderful beer, and a great starting point to their range. It's a beer for the romantics, a result of centuries of time honoured tradition. The benchmark Marzen. It's a Masterpiece. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #craftbeer #craftbeerpics #craftbeergeek #craftbeerporn #craftbeerhour #craftbeerlife #craftnotcrap #beer #beerpics #beerporn #beerlover #ale #drinklocal #supportlocal #marzen #bamburg #smokedbeer #schlenkerla #bavaria #beergasm #beerstagram #brewtography #beerme #beergram #beertography #instabeer #beerblogger #tom_tappd

Porter

Stouts are generally considered winter favorites, but its lighter cousin, the porter, is perfect for the fall. Containing generally between 4.5 and 6% alcohol and featuring a medium body with toasted malty notes, often in combination with chocolate and coffee tones, this is the perfect autumn dark beer.

Pumpkin Ale

Pumpkin everything is in style during the fall nowadays, and beer is no exception to the rule. Pumpkin ales are now commonly produced by breweries throughout the world, showcasing the unique flavor of this gourd, which is usually combined with cloves.

𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭! 👨‍🌾 🍺 ⁣ ⁣ Did you know that traditional farmhouse ales are in many ways the direct ancestors of our craft beers? 🤔 Unlike their purity law obsessed German neighbors, Belgian 🇧🇪 farmers would throw almost anything they had laying around the farm into their brews, and they would wild-ferment most of them too! This led to explosively good flavor combinations that characterize the UNESCO recognized and globally beloved Belgian brewing tradition even up to today! ⁣🍻 ⁣ Because of its “anything goes” heritage I’ve always thought that a farmhouse ale might be the best expression of a pumpkin ale 🎃 , even though brown and pale ale bases are used more often by our craft brewers. ⁣ ⁣ Well @hardywood and I must think alike! This is their Farmhouse Pumpkin Ale, an intoxicatingly (in more ways than one) delicious potion of pumpkin, nutmeg, clove, farmhouse funk and Belgian candi sugar. It’s brewed with all-local VA farm-to-brewery ingredients, too; and comes in at a solid 8.5 ABV. 👊 ⁣ If you go to Richmond Va, Hardywood is a MUST VISIT! You probably know all about their famous neighbors who churn out more slurpees than 7-11, but don’t pass on the classically delicious and creative lineup that Hardywood turns out everyday. And they REALLY up their game for holiday season!⁣ 😀 ⁣ #craftbeer #rva #supportlocal #drinklocal #farmhouseale #vacraftbeer #pumpkinale #craftnotcrap #craftbeerlife #craftbeerlover #beerlover #beerlovers #beergeek #beertime #beerme #craftbeergeek #beerporn #thursdayvibes #fall #craftbeerporn #beer #cerveza #instabeer #beerstagram #beertography #craftbrew #beernerd #beeroclock #craftbeerjunkie #pumpkin

Ah, can you smell that? It’s the smell of flowers blooming and the Earth beginning to smile in the Northern Hemisphere as the temperatures warm up and spring kicks into full gear. Believe it or not, after a long and cold winter, it’s almost time for summer evenings outside and warm outdoor activities.

Are you a beer lover who is wondering what beers to add to your list to drink in the warm weather? Here are some great styles to choose from!

Session IPA

Session IPAs are a lighter version of the classic India Pale Ale, which is known for its high hop content and piney, citrus flavors. If you’re looking for a more accessible and easier-to-drink version of the classic IPA, the session version is fantastic for this purpose.

Gose

Have you ever tried a gose before? This beer style has recently emerged as a favorite in the craft beer world after its discovery. This style, which began as an obscure hundreds-old German creation, is now popular due to its slightly sour and salty characteristics, making it perfect for drinking while sweating outside.

Pilsner

If you aren’t quite adventurous enough to wander too far into the craft beer world, don’t despair! By grabbing a classic pilsner, which combines sweet malt flavors with the perfect balance of hop bitterness for a crisp and refreshing product, you’ll be prepared for spending time outside in the warm weather.

There are so many types of beer, and with microbrewing and craft beer becoming more and more popular, it’s important to know the differences between some of the more popular beers. Learn more about beer and you’ll feel cooler when you go out with friends and coworkers.

Lagers

The word lager derives from the German word meaning “to store” because lagers are stored at nearly freezing temperatures before being distributed. Although they can be any number of colors from light to dark, they are generally somewhere in the middle of even lighter. Lagers are often described as tasting crisp and fresh.

Ales

Ales are made with a specific kind of yeast that make them taste fuller and a bit hoppier. They are darker than lagers, but they often still have some taste of fruitiness.

Porter

This beer is very dark in color, almost black, which says a lot about the depth of flavor it has. Although it is a heavier beer, there are still fruity notes to it, and is more aligned with the ale group of beers. Often porters will have the scent or taste of things like chocolate and coffee, but it can also be a bit smoky as well.
