The United States is a huge country with a wide range of cultures. When it comes to food, you’ve probably heard of premier cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco—but these metropolises hardly have a monopoly on culinary clout. If you’re looking for a change of pace, check out some of these underrated gems.

Providence, Rhode Island

Often overlooked for its big East Coast sister Boston, Providence has everything a foodie could ask for. Fresh seafood and forward-thinking restaurants can be found throughout the small city, and it boasts a large Italian population, which contributes to the culinary scene.

Buffalo, New York

You’ve probably heard of Buffalo Wings, but that isn’t all this city has to offer. Try the Beef on Weck, a regional delicacy made of thinly sliced beef with horseradish on a special Kummelweck roll.

Asheville, NC

This up-and-coming town is a hipster haven for foodies, with a diverse selection of cuisine ranging from traditional Appalachian fare to French delicacies to North Carolina style barbecue.

St. Louis, MO

Although St. Louis pizza is controversial, the city boasts a wide range of cuisines, with fantastic Vietnamese, barbecue, and modern American options scattered throughout the city.
