5783 is on its way out and we’re excited to usher in the Jewish new year! Rosh Hashana is synonymous with apples and honey, so if you’re hosting this year, we have some ideas of how to jazz up your menu, while keeping tradition alive.

Baked Brie With Apples and Honey

This dish is the ideal app-le-tizer (sorry, we had to). Start off your meal with oozy Brie or Camembert which is perfect for dipping challah into. Top the cheese wheel with sliced apples and a good drizzle of honey. Bake until gooey and finish off with walnuts if you fancy some crunch.

Apple and Spinach Salad

The best salads feature a mix of textures and flavors. Add apple slices to baby spinach leaves for some sweetness, crumbled feta cheese for saltiness, and candied pecans for crunchiness. Top it off with a honey-mustard vinaigrette for tang.

French Apple Tart

This list would be sorely incomplete without a dessert. As the final course is usually the showstopper, a French apple tart is an excellent option. Granted, it is a little more complex than your everyday apple pie, but it’ll be worth it when you see how impressed your guests are.

Apples are one of the most common ingredients in fall desserts, but you don’t have to limit yourself to making apple pie and cider. If you’re looking for some alternative ways to use apples this season, Naturally Zuzu’s food blog is an amazing source of creative ideas.

Cinnamon Apple Scones

Even if you think you had apples in all possible shapes and forms, we promise you’ve never tried them this way. Apple scones would’ve been delicious enough on their own, but lemon glaze and cinnamon make them even more tasty and comforting.

Kataifi Apple Tart

Apple tart is one of the fall’s classic desserts, but Naturally Zuzu found a way to put a twist on it. She came up with a recipe for an interesting hybrid of apple tart and traditional Greek dessert Kataifi, and the final result is even better than we expected.

Vegan Apple Fritters

Most people make fritters with meat and veggies, but it’s time to give apples a try this fall. Naturally Zuzu recommends using Granny Smith or Honey Crisp apples, mixing them up with the usual fritters ingredients, such as flour and baking powder, and using a powdered sugar and vanilla glaze.

Fall is hands down the best season for desserts. Who doesn’t love pumpkin pie, maple scones, or apple cake? Apple cake is the perfect way to celebrate fall. It’s full of delicious apples, brown sugar, spices, and it’s overall a delicious cake to have with a cup of apple cider or tea on a chilly day!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar
  • 1/3 cups of neutral-tasting oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 1/2  cups of flour
  • 2 1/2 cups of chopped apples
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of melted butter

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, pour in the brown sugar and oil. Mix with a wooden spoon until well combined.
  2. Crack in the egg and mix in well.
  3. Add in the buttermilk as well as the vanilla extract and, again, mix well.
  4. Put in the baking soda and flour and mix with a wooden spoon until just combined. If you mix too much, the cake will be tough.
  5. Fold in the apples very gently.
  6. Grease a 9×13 dish and pour the cake batter into it.
  7. Finally, mix together the white sugar, cinnamon, and butter in a small bowl and cover the top of the cake with it.
  8. Bake at 325 F for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
