Okay, so let’s say you love Indian food and Mexican cuisine. Your favorite YouTube series is Hot Ones. You admire all of the hot sauces in the aisle at the store. There’s only one problem… You’re a wuss when it comes to spicy food. How can you improve your tolerance and get through an entire bag of Takis without giving up? Here are some tips.

Start Small

Sure, you may be made fun of for finding black pepper or crushed red pepper flakes spicy, but who cares? Using them more often in your cooking will help you be able to work your way up to more intense heat.

Be Consistent

If you really want to increase your spice tolerance, you’ll have to eat spicy food more frequently. Keep it gradual but try to include spicy meals at least a few times a week, so you don’t lose all of the tolerance you’ve built up.

Use Coolants

As you start venturing into more and more intense territory, don’t hesitate to make use of coolants like dairy, lime, cilantro, and coconut milk. This will help put out the fire in your mouth, and it’s a totally legit way to make spicy food more tolerable.

We love spicy foods and we can’t imagine our last meal of the day without a glass of wine, but which wines pair well with spicy foods? Each type of heat requires a different style of wine and we’ve got wine pairings for the four most popular types of spicy cuisines.

Rosè With Mexican Cuisine

Chile peppers are a distinct ingredient in Mexican food and regional cooking and traditional recipes use jalapeños, serranos, habaneros, anchos, and poblanos. Rosè is the perfect wine to pair with Mexican food because the fruity wine balances out the earthy and smoky flavors food in the cuisine.

Prosecco With Indian Food

Indian food is known for its spices which can include hot chiles, cinnamon, coriander, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, and garam masala. Since the spices are so varied, it’s best to go with a simple wine like Prosecco. The sweetness of Prosecco will balance out the heat in the spicy dishes and the bubbles will cleanse your palette when you’re eating the creamy dishes.

Gewurztraminer With Thai Cuisine

The hot peppers in Thai recipes can be crushed, fried, pickled, or dried and they’re usually combined with other herbs and spices like lemongrass, coriander, cilantro, and ginger. Gewurztraminer has a tropical flavor with notes of lychee, white peach, ripe apricot, and rose petal and the sweetness in this wine is light, which will calm down the heat in your mouth from the food.

Off-Dry Riesling With Cajun Dishes

Cajun food from Louisiana uses a lot of cayenne pepper, hot pepper, black pepper, oregano, paprika, and garlic. An off-dry or medium-dry Riesling will help balance the heat.
