If you’re a huge fan of baking—a rolling pin is probably one of the essential tools in your kitchen. Most people spend years or even decades baking with the same rolling pin, and you can prolong the life span of your own by using these three tips to take good care of it.

Just Skip Water

The majority of dishes can and should be soaked with water, but the same can’t be said about rolling pins. Soaking up your rolling pin, using too much soap, or washing it in a dishwasher can strip it of its natural oils and cause the wood to crack.

Damp Cloth Cleanup

Instead of using too much water to wash your rolling pin, opt for a damp cloth instead. If you’re struggling to get rid of the dough stuck on the pin, use a bench scraper and flour the pin, because it will be much easier to brush off the dough this way.

Store It Right

You could be exposing your rolling pin to nicks and scratches by storing it in a crowded spot. Storing it in a designated place—where it’s not bumping into any other objects—could prolong the life span of your rolling pin by several years.
