Printing food is not a new idea. We have often seen it in sci-fi shows, but it never felt like it could become something real, at least not soon. However, it appears that 3D food printing is already here.

Austrian startup Revo Foods teamed up with Swedish biotech company Mycorena to create a mycoprotein (fungi protein) that can be used in 3D printers. Their first product is salmon fillet, which comes with all the properties of the real deal, including Omega-3, essential amino acids, and vitamins.

The company markets its 3D-printed salmon fillet as THE FILET and has already made it available in certain grocery store chains in Austria. Starting October 1, THE FILET can also be ordered through Revo Foods’ webshop.

If THE FILET ends up being a success, the company intends to expand its line of products.

“3D Food Printing is one of the most innovative concepts of food tech, and allows for the first time the creation of complex products such as realistic plant-based filets or steaks. All this is thanks to the precise integration of protein and fat ingredients into a final product,” the company explained in a statement.

You can see the salmon filet being printed in a promotional video below.
