All of us know what an apple is, right? This classic fruit is a favorite all around the world and can be found in kitchens and lunchboxes throughout the world.

What about a cane apple, though? Have you ever heard of this lesser-known fruit?

Cane apples come from a bush known as the “strawberry tree” (it’s confusing, we know) which is located throughout the Mediterranean region as well as the British Isles. These bushes produce small, vibrant red colored-fruits that have a spiky outside and are approximately the size of a large grape.

While cane apples are not commonly eaten by themselves due to their poor ability to hold up in transport to stores, when opened up, they contain an edible portion which is sweet and tart. This is commonly used for several culinary items such as marmalades, jams, and liquors.

One of Portugal’s most beloved spirits, called Medronho, is a brandy which is made with and flavored by cane apples.

Other uses for the cane apple include in pastries and cakes, in yogurt, and as a pollination source for a special variety of honey.

Have you ever tried a product made with the cane apple before? What did you think of it?

We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and this couldn’t be more true. The food you put into your body in the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day and a good breakfast will keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer. The Mediterranean diet has long been associated with focusing on grains and produce, which makes it perfect for eating healthy breakfast foods. Here are five Mediterranean-inspired breakfasts.

Mediterranean Breakfast Oatmeal

Oatmeal has tons of fiber, which keep you feeling full longer. To make it savory, add tomatoes, yogurt, and fresh herbs. If you prefer sweet breakfasts, use fresh figs and tahini or peanut butter and bananas.

Mediterranean Breakfast Omelette

Eggs are packed with protein and omelettes can be customized with your favorite vegetables and cheeses. For a tangy take, add red wine vinegar, fresh vegetables, and avocado or you can make a vegan omelet with chickpeas instead of eggs and adding bell peppers and spinach.

Mediterranean Breakfast Parfait

Greek yogurt has twice the protein and half the carbs of regular yogurt, meaning you’ll be satisfied longer. It’s great with walnuts, fresh or dried fruits, and granola.

Mediterranean Breakfast Wraps

For a healthier take, opt for a whole grain wrap and fill it with hummus, avocado, egg, spinach, and black beans.

Mediterranean Breakfast Smoothies

On a hot summer day, nothing beats a smoothie and they will hydrate you while giving you your daily dose of fruits and vegetables. Add some Greek yogurt for an extra dose of protein.
