Marzen

Germany’s Oktoberfest is the biggest beer celebration in the world, and this fall classic revolves around one thing: Marzen beer. This German favorite is now made around the world and stands out for its clean, smooth, malty character which is perfect for cool weather sipping.

One of my all time favourites. @schlenkerla1405 blew me away when I was younger, the first that shattered my preconceptions of what beer could and should be. Layers upon layers of flavour, a shopping list full of unique and interesting flavours yet with such an easy, casual drinkability. It pours an aesthetically pleasing ruby/mahogany hue with a tan coloured head. The smoked bacon/sausage aspect of the beer can sometimes be overplayed and pigeonhole this beer, but it's far from a one trick piggy. Yes, there's a butchery's worth of smoky bacon on the nose and in the initial taste but it settles down and begins to be matched by other flavours. Caramel, tobacco, the tingle of herbs from the German noble hops, honey on burnt toast, charred wood. The beer has a lovely medium body, not too heavy considering the rich abundance of flavour at play. Just a wonderful beer, and a great starting point to their range. It's a beer for the romantics, a result of centuries of time honoured tradition. The benchmark Marzen. Stouts are generally considered winter favorites, but its lighter cousin, the porter, is perfect for the fall. Containing generally between 4.5 and 6% alcohol and featuring a medium body with toasted malty notes, often in combination with chocolate and coffee tones, this is the perfect autumn dark beer.

Pumpkin everything is in style during the fall nowadays, and beer is no exception to the rule. Pumpkin ales are now commonly produced by breweries throughout the world, showcasing the unique flavor of this gourd, which is usually combined with cloves.

Unlike their purity law obsessed German neighbors, Belgian ?? farmers would throw almost anything they had laying around the farm into their brews, and they would wild-ferment most of them too! This led to explosively good flavor combinations that characterize the UNESCO recognized and globally beloved Belgian brewing tradition even up to today! ⁣? ⁣ Because of its “anything goes” heritage I’ve always thought that a farmhouse ale might be the best expression of a pumpkin ale ? , even though brown and pale ale bases are used more often by our craft brewers. ⁣ ⁣ Well @hardywood and I must think alike! This is their Farmhouse Pumpkin Ale, an intoxicatingly (in more ways than one) delicious potion of pumpkin, nutmeg, clove, farmhouse funk and Belgian candi sugar. It’s brewed with all-local VA farm-to-brewery ingredients, too; and comes in at a solid 8.5 ABV. ? ⁣ If you go to Richmond Va, Hardywood is a MUST VISIT! You probably know all about their famous neighbors who churn out more slurpees than 7-11, but don’t pass on the classically delicious and creative lineup that Hardywood turns out everyday.
