Honey comes with a long list of benefits, and it’s a great alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners—as long as you use it in moderation. Despite its huge popularity, there are many myths about honey out there, but is there any truth to them?

Crystallized = Spoiled

You shouldn’t throw your honey away once it crystallizes. Crystallization is honey’s way of preserving itself, and it doesn’t have a negative impact on its nutritional or quality values. Your honey can change over time, but it won’t go bad if it’s properly stored in a sealed container.

Metal Spoons

Another myth suggests you shouldn’t use metal spoons to scoop honey, due to its organic acid content. Honey, however, won’t lead to corrosion—unless you leave your spoon inside for a prolonged period of time.

Hot Water Mix

You can add honey to hot water or tea, but keep in mind it will end up reducing its flavor and aroma and potently destroy some of its natural qualities. Wait until your water cools down a little bit before adding honey to the mix.
