We all love pumpkins once winter comes. We even find ways to use them as home decor or add them to different meals. These delicious fruits hide much more potential than you thought. Check out some of the surprising facts about pumpkins that you’ve never heard of.

Pumpkins Are Fruits

For all the ones that had them confused with vegetables, pumpkins belong to the large group of fruits. They are winter squashes. If tomatoes can be fruits, so can pumpkins.

They Come In Many Colors

These fruits come in a wide number of shapes, colors, and sizes. It’s really impressive how many different pumpkins you can see. Everyone relates the color orange to a pumpkin, but it is available in yellow, dark green, blue, cream, and so on. Shapes and sizes vary too. They can be huge and round, long like cucumbers, shaped like pears and more. The sizes range from super small, to humongous.

Every Part Is Edible

Back in the day, people used to eat all of the parts of a pumpkin. It is strange to hear, but the vines, flowers, seeds and even leaves are edible. The seeds are, of course, super-delicious, we all know that. But the flowers can actually be cooked. The same applies to the vines and leaves.

Pumpernickel bread is one of the most flavor-filled loaves of bread out there, but did you know about its origins? Pumpernickel bread was first created in Germany. The bread is a combination of a sourdough bread starter and ground rye (and in traditional loaves whole rye berries). The combination of these ingredients creates the sweeter rye bread that we have grown to love.

Originally the bread was thought of as a peasant’s food but now it is found and celebrated around the world in many different dishes. The bread is best known for its sweet taste and coffee-like flavoring. The appearance of pumpernickel is really what makes it stand out. There is no crust and the bread, because of a chemical reaction that happens during the baking process, is a dark brown color. Because the bread has such a strong flavor it is used less commonly but can really amp up a homemade sandwich!
