We’ve all been there. And if we’re being honest, probably more than once. You open your fridge and reach for your avocado only to find it’s brown and gone bad. Avocados are a delicious and nutritious addition to many meals and it’s a shame to have them go to waste. Here are three great tips to help you keep them fresh longer.

The Refrigerator Method

For ripe avocados you’re not quite ready to use, the refrigerator should be your go-to storage solution. Whole, ripe avocados should last for 3-5 days when stored in the crisper drawer of your fridge.

The Lemon Juice Technique

If you’ve already cut into your avocado, oxidation becomes your enemy. To combat this, you should brush the exposed flesh with lemon juice. The citric acid in the lemon juice should slow down the browning process. After applying the juice, wrap the avocado tightly in plastic wrap before refrigerating.

The Onion Hack

For a unique approach to avocado storage, you should try the onion method. Place a cut avocado in an airtight container with a few chunks of red onion. The sulfur compounds released by the onion should slow down the oxidation process, keeping your avocado greener for longer.

Avocados can be used in a long list of different dishes, but the real trouble starts once you notice that the ones you bought aren’t perfectly ripe. To avoid this problem, follow these three short steps to determine how ripe avocados at your local grocery store really are before buying them.

Step 1: Color

Most people rely on visual cues when determining the ripeness of certain fruits. This method doesn’t always work, but it can come in handy in the case of avocados. The ones with dark green or nearly black skin are ripe enough and can be eaten right away. That’s not the case with green avocados and you’ll wait for them to ripen before eating them.

Step 2: Texture

The texture is another external factor that will help you determine an avocado’s ripeness. Avocados that have a bumpy texture, in addition to dark green color, are usually perfectly ripe and ready for consumption, but that’s rarely the case with smooth ones.

Step 3: Firmness

If color and texture aren’t giving you enough cues about the ripeness of avocados, it’s time to check their firmness. Ripe avocados usually feel feels slightly soft but not too mushy when you gently squeeze them because they’re one of those fruits that soften as they ripen.

Most people don’t eat an entire avocado at once due to their high fat and calorie content, but storing them properly is easier said than done. They’re prone to turning brown extremely quickly, but there are tricks you can use to make them stay fresh for longer.

Wrap Them Up

Leaving your avocados in your fridge as they are won’t do them any favors. The least you can do to delay the browning process is to cover them with some plastic wrap.

Olive Oil

A tiny drop of olive oil can help you keep your cut avocados fresh for longer. Brush your halved avocados with olive oil that doesn’t have a strong taste and store them in an airtight container to prevent them from browning.

Lemon to the Rescue

The olive oil method can also be repeated with lemon or lime juice. Just like all the other citrus fruits, lemon contains strong antioxidants, which can come in handy in this situation.

Onion Method

Avocados and onions may not seem like the perfect combo, but they are. If none of the previous methods work, chop some red onions and place them in an airtight container with avocados on top. Their strong vapors will prolong the browning process of your avocados.
